I am on my second batch of chicks. My first batch included a Wyandotte and I have to say, she is the most skittish hen and I can't catch her unless she is already locked in the coop or is broody. Right now I have one really friendly one that I hope is not a roo. SHE is my naked neck and I...
Those look cool.
I have frozen veggies and fruit in water in plastic Tupperware for hot days. Slides out and the larger blocks last longer during the day to keep them cool.
They also LOVE frozen watermelon. Cut in 1/2 or 1/4's (if large) and freeze, super easy.

Kangasox,
My chicken run has a room with corrugated metal on top. Helps to keep cool in the summer, stops it from getting to wet in the winter. I use deep litter method in my outdoor run.
Can you post a pic? I would love to see what the pavers around the coop look like.
Thanks,
Marci
Rachel,
Have you logged a written complaint? It is frustrating but the squeaky wheel in the hospital gets the most grease.
When my grandfather and later grandmother was in the hospital we had to be on top of everything. When my grandmother was hospitalized for Salmonella and Clostridium...
Sorry for your loss. What state are you in? Often for small flocks the state will do a free necropsy (technical term for autopsy on a person). That is the best way to find out if it was infectious, Mareks, cancer, etc to help with future planning.

Is it normal for a broody hen to be more picked on? I had a hen go broody that spent most of last year broody to the point that the broody box did not work at all or she would become broody again within 2 weeks. I would force her out of the nest box at least once a day and lock the coop for an...
Thanks so much Karen! Unfortunately, I did not get your reply for a few days and could not tell the difference in the feathering. "She" is the calmest of this bunch of chicks. They are a little more skittish then my last group. You gave such great info in a nice concise format. I'll post...
Hi,
I have a 4 day old Naked Neck Turken. I have never owned one before and most pictures show a solid colored bird. This chick has unusual coloring of her first wing feathers. Has anyone ever seen coloring like this? Could this indicate that it is a roo instead?
Thanks,
Motts
I agree, this seems a little young to go broody. When mine are broody, Ito force them out of the box, they will run around and socialize for short periods of time. How long has she been laying? Feel her legs, any fractures , wounds, etc?
Not sure if I am posting in the correct thread but here if goes. I have 4 chickens in a an enclosed coop and run. I like to let them out into my back yard to forage and have lots of free time. My yard is just under 1 acre. For the first year they stayed in the yard and often under the trees...
Hi KGreene,
I have a question if you don't mind. Our chicken run made of wood was sitting on the ground. We raised the run onto some cement block and found out that it was infested with termites. My hubbie let the chickens clean up a lot of the critters then replaced the damaged wood with...
Gassing with carbon dioxide is not a pleasant way to die for a bird. Anyone ever have to watch or help do it? I did at a rehab center because it was the only legal way they were allowed to do it at the time. It would be more humane to perform cervical dislocation then this. I would have...
I have a raised coop attached to a covered enclosed run.
Inside the coop I was using shavings and liked them but for the last 6 weeks or so I have switched to coffee chaff. It is very fluffy but so far I love it. 6 weeks plus and just changed the bedding for the first time and only because...
Hi all,
So I have a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte that went broody 1 month ago. 3.5 days in the elevated broody cage stopped the behavior for about 2 weeks.
She is broody again.
This time I put her in the cage about 2-3 days after she stopped laying eggs. She spent a whopping 10 days in the...
Got some pics of Merida my blue laced red wyandotte in the nesting box today.
Couldn't resist - my oldest on his bike. Took pics then told him to get his helmet on!
...and my youngest out in the rain. He was very happy to finally be able to wear his raincoat!
I had a stray chicken that showed up with a wound similiar to that. Actually about 2-3" of the pelvic bone was present with even the muscle missing. The hardest problem I had was that I had a hard time keeping the wound clean. She felt amazingly good and kept trying to take dust, pine shaving...
