I scored a free Hovabator last year. I tried 24 Rhode Island reds this spring had 12 hatch. Then I set 24 French Copper Maran eggs only 8 hatched. That one hurt at $7 a dozen. I have built several homemade incubators and had 100% hatches in them. Nothing below 85%. I had to hand turn the eggs...
I am wanting to hatch some chickens for chicken and dressing.
I will be butchering them a few days before Thanksgiving. I will be setting about 5 eggs and they will be barnyard mutts. I know Cornish-X's will be ready in about 8 weeks, but how long will I need to raise the "mutts" before...
I have been thinking about quail. And after reading a few post on the pros and cons of dispatching them, I was thinking about making a homemade guillotine. I was thinking about using Garden Shears. Cut the handles off and mount it on a table. Use the free handle as the cutting arm.
Any...
I was able to get a few pictures this morning.
The one on the upper left I think is a Black Giant, right is a Barred Rock.
Black Giant on the roost.
I hope this my Dark Cornish Barred Rock in upper left corner.
This is what it looked like when I got them. I now know that the hatchery will...
I have ordered 7 Barred Rocks and 7 Black Giants. Well now I cant tell them apart. They are right 4 weeks old and I have a few with white starting to show. It is in a checker board fashion. I am thinking that these are my BR's. I will take some pictures and post them.
I found a incubator with egg turner on freecycle. Just went and picked it up today.
I plugged the turner in to see if it works. I will give it a good cleaning this weekend and see if everything else works.
Not bad for free....
If it works I want to add a fan to it.
It was day 18 yesterday and I stopped turning my eggs. I placed them into a egg carton and shut the door. Came back about thirty minutes later to check my humidity and noticed that it was up around 90%. I opened up the bator and was about to cover the bowl of water a little and noticed that the...
I have been watching my rooster lately. It seems he has his favorite hens. I only have four hens and he only services 2, the other 2 he never bothers. I have been checking the eggs and 2 out of 4 are infertile. Is this normal?
I have been asked through the PM here on BackYard Chickens Forum to build a incubator step by step with measurements and pictures. So here goes.
1. You will need to keep the cost down, it wouldn't take long to
exceed the cost of a store bought "bator".
2. Use recycled parts whenever...
I ordered a Dark Cornish rooster and 6 Barred Rock pullets. Be here June 2nd. I know the growth rate will be far slower the the Cornish X's. I am just wondering if anyone has experimented with this cross before?
Also, what other crosses has anyone experimented with? What kind of luck did you...

The above link is to a clock that I found for the pc. You can set it to chime every quarter hour, half hour or, hour. You can also customise it with different chimes, one is a rooster crowing.
Last fall I gave my worm box incubator to a friend. I scrounged the parts to build another one.
First I needed to cut a hole for the light socket. I cut it just a little smaller than the outside diameter of the socket. I wanted a tight fit.
Now for the thermostat. I wanted to mount it at the...
I have order some cornish x's and I need a place to put them. Found this sight, thought it would be interesting. Heres the link.

I just ordered 6 Barred Rock Pullets and 1 Dark Cornish roo. Has anyone had any experience with this breed/mix? Would they have a decent growth rate? Does anyone think that they might grow out in 8 to 12 weeks. I may also try the Dark Cornish roo on some Black Giants. Just wondering, Would like...
I went out yesterday to give my chickens some treats. I could only find two. One was a little bloody, the other was pretty shook up. I managed to find 4 of the six chickens,..........two were missing. I later found them at 10:00 PM under the nest box. All seemed to be fine.
I let my chickens...
