We collect the fat during the butchering, and when I've got a fair amount stored in the freezer I put it in the crockpot to render it down slowly. Lanolin from what I've heard is good to use in soaps, but I wouldn't know at what percentage or anything like that...
Dosed Valbazen and have many dozens of eggs collected during the withhold period. Thought about doing a hatch...anyone try this? Anyone know the effects of dewormers on fertile eggs?
I've used chicken fat in CP (cold process) soaps several times, usually at no more than 15-20%. The soap calculator at http://www.soapcalc.net/calc/SoapCalcwp.asp
has chicken fat listed, and it gives the general properties. Typically you'd expect a soft soap that adds conditioning qualities...
I have a question on day old brahmas. I picked up 25 straight run Light Brahma today and some have relatively light coloring, and some have relatively dark coloring...is this an auto-sexing trait where I can tell male from female, or simply coincidence???
That's interesting that within the same cross there are such striking differences, and from different crosses there are such similarities. I;d have guessed all the darker ones coming from one hen et cetera...that's cool that you were able to keep tabs and leg band them. It makes me wonder...
Update plus the pics. Update is that yesterday Melinda took the two chicks to the mother and it was nice, but another hen stepped on the little chick, created chaos with the flock, and the little thing go trampled to death. Here are some pics of the chicks and Mama. The lightest colored of...
There's a yellow-footed EE living in my room...do what? The little chick that nearly died got trampled this morning by the other hens and ended up under the feeder, got cold, and Melinda brought it inside. She's keeping inside until it gets some feathers and is stronger. Cute little thing...
Howdy! Yes, we put the eggs under her just before I left out of town, which was right at "night" 18. There were 8 eggs left from the original set, and 5 of them (3 EE x RIR, 1 Ausssie x RIR, 1 Leghorn x RIR) hatched. 3 others (BR, Leghorn and EE) were shrinkwrapped internally and died trying...
Here are several pics of my Bantam-Buff-Brahma x Leghorn girls. There are only 2 of them, one is bright white for the most part, while the other has some orange tints on the neck et cetera...I like the very faint feathering on their feet. They are a little smaller than my 16 week-old SLW...
This thread is treasure of a find! I ordered 20 pullets about 16 weeks ago and as of yesterday was convinced that half are cockerels. But looking at these posts gives me a bit of a breather on that; perhaps I've got mostly pullets afterall, maybe one cockerel. I'll let them age a bit more...
Well, I took pictures but forgot to bring the camera with me to download the pics, so it'll have to wait some more. At the moment only 2 leghorns are laying, everyone else has decided to take the winter off. We were getting 11 eggs a day up until this last cold front and they decided it was...
I've had a buff orp with a comb that large at a younf age, so you may want to wait a while. At 20 weeks I would expect to see some hackle and saddle feathers come around. You may very well have landed a nice pullet, but it's tough to say based on the one picture.
I saw you post on that one...
Poor thing...they are about the gentlest breed we've had. Even though I keep only full size hens, we still have one (Ziggy) because the kids absolutely love them, and she's the only hen that will let them carry her around all day.
With the squatting I'd think there's a problem, but I've seen...
Many nights Melinda has to remind me to come in FROM the coop!!! Today a group of homeschoolers is coming over for a Valentine's party...I think she said there will be 23 children at our house...hmmmmmmmmmm...ear plugs anyone?
Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
Howdy from just up the road! :)
(I work in that area, but we moved to Bremond to have a place for a couple dairy goats and the chickens. It's a lot fun.)
For a heat source you may be able to find a small space-heater, but those generally aren't consistent enough for trying to calibrate temps for hatching eggs. I suggest trying to find someone with a commercial brooder and see if they'll let you look around it to see what parts are involved...
Howdy Ya'll!
I noticed a thread here on BYC where some folks are putting a pin on a google map for potential "chicken sitting" while someone's away for a couple days. I've got a link to it in my signature box if anyone is interested. It's not a commitmemt, just a tool for folks to look at in...
I've seen cases where people have too many roosters and don't have the heart to eat them, so they take them and dump them off in "the country". Agree on the potential breed.
