Once you have cracked the egg into a bowl to see if it's fertilized or not, haven't you defeated the purpose? The egg ISN'T going to hatch!
As to the original questions, no, I have not had experience with 14 yr olds dictating what would be served for dinner.

Well.... Generally folks don't 'hang' waterers. If you do, all the weight of the waterer will be on that little peg that sticks out to feed the trough.
Hang the feeders, but put the waterers on a block of cement.

There is a way to tell on newborns, but unfortunately I can't remember how! LOL.... 'Jody' on the old board described it well quite a while ago... Had to do with the wing feathers and how fast they were growing.

My first thought was molting. Especially since you said 'some' of your chickens. If it was all of them, then I'd lean toward mites or lice.
Increase their protein abit and that may help the feathers grow in faster.
