She's been laying about 6 months now. Nice natured chicken and the best forager.

My Turken (NN) is a year old and laying small eggs.

How much longer until I will see the famously large eggs that the Transylvanian Naked Necks are noted for? She's a great layer--of smaller eggs than my Leghorns, Barred Rock and Buff Orpingtons. Maybe this summmer?

Leghorns in a northern Utah winter. Do I worry about their combs?

We are going to pick up three 4-week old Leghorn pullets this evening. After reading a little bit about them, I've seen several comments on putting petroleum jelly on their combs in the winter. I've never done that for my black stars, frizzle banties, dominiques, australorp or austra-whites...

A "rattling" water bottle. Rattle it first, squirt her next. Hopefully she'll get the hint and just the sound after a few squirts.

Weed and feed—and my backyard chickens.

For the past several years, I have not put any fertilizer or weed/feed compounds on our back lawn (where the hens run free) because my wife is worried about the chickens health. Well, three years later and the lawn is horrible looking. I would like to get a weed and feed, do the lawn one...

One of my hens keeps pecking me - please help

If thumping or flicking seem harsh to you. I have established myself as "head chicken" on occasion with a squirt bottle. They need to see who is squirting them to know who is in charge, and you're not going to hurt them on a hot summer day. It works quickly for me, there a even a few of the...

    Lonely chicken

I would suggest getting another chicken for her to be with. From all I have read, chickens can get lonely and die. Introducing a new one has challenges, so be patient. Lots of good integration advice can be found on this forum. Hopefully others will respond here too.

Hen or Roo? (Breed info would be nice too.)

My wife's friend has a chicken they offered to us. They won it at the city celebration (I guess they ran out of goldfish). They are not set up for chickens at their home. We can't have roosters (city ordinance.) Can you help us identify him/her?

    Deep litter? PDZ,? Sand?

I have a similar coop (see my page). I use sand in the run and pine pellets (the kind sold for pellet burning fireplaces) inside. The pellets are great at absorbing moisture quickly. I clean the pellets out 3 times a year and add them to my compost pile. I use pine shavings and some grass...

Eggs. Keep them in the refrigerator or at room temperature?

We keep our eggs in the refrigerator, but have heard of people keeping them at room temperature. If fresh eggs are going to be used within a week (two at the most), which way would you store them?

    Harrisville Chickens Chicken Coop

Our Coop The coop has a 4'x8' footprint. 8' tall (sloping one way to 6' on the short side.) The coop is about 4'x'4 floor space raised 3' feet off the ground. They have access by chicken ladder underneath the coop through a doorway in the floor. I have since added some 2x4 roosts to the...
