    Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

I'm new as well and was like an excited new grandparent with their first grandchild when one of our RIR laid the first egg out of our 8 hens! She was 19 wks old and has given us an egg a day since then. Our black sexlink just joined in the egg song this past weekend and I'm expecting the rest...

HELP A Barred Rock - desperate need

From what I've read about similar symptoms you might want to quarantine the affected chicken and keep a watch on the rest...hopefully none of the others are experiencing the same symptoms? I was hoping another BYC veteran might have seen your post by now and responded with some suggestions...

HELP A Barred Rock - desperate need

You didn't mention how long she's been this way... I'm new to keeping chickens, too and it seems like there are soooo many things that can go wrong! Be sure to search on BYC or just online in general for symptoms similar to what is going on with your chicken and try what makes the most sense!

HELP A Barred Rock - desperate need

How's her neck/head? Any droopiness? I had a droopy necked BR when it was about the same age a few months ago and we put vitamin E in the water we gave her to drink out of a medicine cup. (Be careful she doesn't aspirate when using a syringe) When I looked for treatment I ran across chickens...

so as long as there are small rocks/pebbles/sand available to them they should eat what they need of the grit and be fine with foraging and BOSS? They're coop is surrounded by pea gravel haha

coop bedding- what do you prefer??

We dug the gravel out of the bottom of the coop but can't agree on what to do. This is a photo of the layout - it was all wet (not soggy) but I was thinking that if the area was dry in the morning I would just try the pine shavings and see if there is a moisture problem. If that doesn't work...

coop bedding- what do you prefer??

Yes it is somewhat lower. I guess it doesn't matter if the shavings get mixed in with the gravel if we add it on top of the gravel?

coop bedding- what do you prefer??

Hi Michael, Question about the pea gravel. You don't have fly or moisture problems? Our coop is 2 levels and on the bottom is pea gravel. The top inch or so is dry but it's damp/wet the lower you dig. I scoop out the poops each day and give it a good stir but the flies are all over it. It...

    Deep Litter Method

RonP, Thanks for the reply...it confirms our decision to dig out the pea gravel (tonight!) and replace with pine shavings. Always something to learn

    Deep Litter Method

I realize this is an old thread, but after reading this thread I'm not sure what method I'm using! I was hoping someone might still get a notification... I have a 2 level coop (6' x 6') made from an existing playhouse with a wooden top floor and 6" of pea gravel on the bottom. I've been...

    Droopy or Wry Neck SUCCESS!

I wanted to post about this in case someone else was experiencing the same thing... When I let my 9 chickens out of the coop around noon this past Sunday I discovered one of my PBR 5 month old chicks had a droopy and somewhat crooked neck. I'm new to chickens and had never heard or read...
