Yep, I did it. (asked for help to ID color of new Polish chick)

Just succumbed to an impulse buy of 2 polish chicks at Atwoods because my daughter loves the one we have. The other one is a white crested black, but I can't find pictures to confirm color in this little cutie. Gold laced black is my initial guess.

Hi all, Some of us that have posted on my other thread: 'Summer reading ideas or maybe a BYC book club.' https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/summer-reading-ideas-or-maybe-a-byc-book-club.1473044/ have decided to choose one book to read at the same time. We're starting with Mary Jane by...

To Peel or not to Peel (eggs for charity).

I'm getting tons of extra eggs right now and a nearby town has a community fridge where people can take food they need and donate what they like. I decided to hard boil a bunch in the instant pot and donate them in labeled sandwich baggies with 4 or 5 in each. I'm sure some of the people are...

Summer reading ideas or maybe a BYC book club.

Hey everybody. I usually only have time to read in the summer time (HS teacher). I love to listen to audiobooks borrowed on the public library app while I work in the garden, fold laundry, tend chickens, etc. I have also been known to name a chicken or two after a character now and then...

Can I use 1 inch hardware cloth for coop/run?

Hi, I'm building a new coop and run for my baby chickens. The old girls live in a dump LOL. I'm getting ready to purchase the hardware cloth, and my local hardware store quoted me $43 for a 50 foot roll of 4ft high 1 inch hardware cloth. 19 gauge. Way cheaper than Amazon, but I was looking...

    Limping hen. Need advice.

I have a hen- just turned 2 years old last month. She just started limping this afternoon and favoring her left leg. She is moving and eating. I'm thinking maybe a sprain. Haven't tried to pick her up because I don't want to stress her out. There are only 4 girls in this group. Little to...

How do I help my little runt chick?

I’m really concerned about the tiny salmon favorelle we got from Meyer Hatchery on Wednesday. She’s half the size of the other chicks and is not as active. Probably a late Hatcher from the adoption bin. We got 4 of those. Her little crop seems empty though she did eat and drink when we first...

So many little blue/grey fluffy butts. How to ID breeds? Are they Marans, Andalusians, Orpingtons? Help!

We just got in 19 chicks from Meyer Hatchery. 16 assorted rare pullets, 4 of the adopt me late hatchers, and one meal maker (white leghorn I think). I think I have some lavender orpington and some look like maybe blue marans, but are there easy ways to tell if they don't have leg feathering...

What to do about too many roos?

Despite my using exclusively female pronouns on my chicks, it appears that I have 4 cockrels out of 10. They were hatched around June 10th. Obviously I don't need 4 roosters, but would be okay with 1 or maybe 2 if they are good with people. I'll probably add some more girls later. My husband...

PLEASE ADVISE ASAP- Adding chicks to new broody mom with one baby

I have a young flower hen who hatched out one chick on Saturday ( 5 days ago). This is her first brood and they seem to be doing fine. I have a bunch set to hatch on Tuesday (5 days from now). I have 37 in the incubator, but don't plan on keeping all of them. She is currently penned in a very...

    Limping pullet

Last night I noticed one of my flower hen pullets was having a hard time getting up to roost. Then I noticed she had a limp. She isn't very tame, so I haven't wanted to inure her further by catching her in the open. I can try tonight. She is eating well and tries to hurry to get to...

Free Chicks From Atwoods. Any Ideas?????

Atwoods had straight run chicks for 1.99 with a 1.99 online rebate up to 6 chicks. I decided to roll the dice and hope for a few pullets. I just asked the guy to give me some with skinny legs. Any opinions on breed or gender? Purchased today.

Using a training collar on my new dog.

We recently added a 4 year old red heeler/border collie mix female to our family. Her previous owner said she was miserable after moving to town and needed a home in the country. He said she stayed out of the road for the most part and that he was not sure how she would do with chickens...

question about adding chick from incubator to brood

My hen decided to raise a family in the spot where she and my other hen lay eggs. I did not move her when she first went broody (now I know better), so I have about 15 eggs at various stages in an incubator in my son's room. She has successfully hatched out 3 chicks and is a great momma. Two...

    New from Central Oklahoma

Hi All, I live in the Norman/Noble area of Oklahoma. We've had chickens for about a year. I currently have 3 adults; a Red Sex-Link hen, Buff Orpington Rooster, and a hen that looks like a Brown Leghorn with black legs (currently in a giant dog kennel with 3 babies). We also have 8...
