    CT Chickenstock-2009

Quote: I think because not many people were interested in doing it, and PC wasn't going to be there. We normally have a few processing parties through out the year, so I'm sure there will be a chance for you get in on it. oooohh, coolio! do you post that stuff in the CT board? i'd like to...

    CT Chickenstock-2009

Quote: Well I'll be there and can bring my hatchet if anyone else wants to process. dangit, i just remembered i have a friend coming to visit & stay over that night with her 2 boys so i wouldn't be able to make it again this year. oh well, if it were moved to saturday i could make it though...

    can horses fake lameness?

i'm a saddle fitter and several things you've said are all red flags for an ill fitting saddle. you mentioned she "works out of the lameness" after a little bit of riding, and that's she's terribly girthy. displaying lameness under saddle but not lame out to pasture. i'm not saying the saddle...

Boy, the cost of a "chicken vet" is outragious...

Quote: lol, how exactly do you mail a dead chicken? mustn't it stink a wee bit? do you send it overnight on dry ice? hope that one doesn't get lost in the mail! but to the OP, my horse vet will do a fecal for about $5. maybe you could try a large animal vet?

Question about using Diatomaceous Earth for chickens to dust bathe in.

i sprinkle some DE in their favorite dust bathing spot, as well as in the nest boxes. and you actually have fly spray that works? i get about 5 minutes where my horse's tail isn't swishing and then it's pretty much back to furious windmills.

    First Chicken-eating-mouse experience . . .

i've never seen them eat a mouse, but i did catch them going godzilla on a frog once. definitely gave me a whole new respect for the ferocity of those lightening fast beaks. i guess i might keep the kittens away from the chickens until they were a little bigger ?

Adding Chickens to an Existing Flock

when i added my 3 new 12 week olds to my existing flock of 3, 1-year olds it was brutal to say the least. i kept the new ones seperated for about 2 weeks, but in plain view. they were seperated by hardware cloth. when i integrated them i did it at night like all the suggestions say. it's...

    Wife's Christmas Present (New Coop)

what breed of chicken is that? beautiful coop, neat idea to have the ramp underneath, but do you think it might be a problem with shavings falling out? or will you not have bedding on the floor? seriously though, nice job!

Do your chickens use their ramp???

i have a double decker ramp inside the coop going up to the roost. they all use it, they hang out on it so they can look out the windows too. it's fun scraping the poop off of it ...

    chicken coop heater pictures

thought i'd add my 2 cents ... i *try* to be logical about my chickens, i only have 6 girls but i'm fortunate enough to have a large coop for them; 8x8x10. i only have the roof area insulated, not the walls. i figured most of the heat would be lost through the roof, and when it came to...

What color are your yolks? I'm disappointed with mine

i've noticed whenever i give my girls hay chafe (leftover from hay deliveries for the horses) that their yolks get very orangy golden. plus they go bonkers for it and it's fun to watch them go bonkers.

    What breed?

hmmm, i got mine from the local feed & supply store. they only order a handful of the more popular breeds from the hatchery's so I doubt mine are red caps. but i suppose there could have been a mistake at the hatchery ... i'm thinking mine are Ameraucanas that would make the most sense...

    What breed?

i'm not sure what breed you have but i wanted to say that i have 3 chicks that are 9 weeks old that look exactly like yours. they were sold to me as barred plymouth rocks and while i'm no chicken expert i don't think that's what they are. the black feathers have a green iridescent hue to...

A rooster showed up on our porch last Sunday -- what do we do?

Quote: as in Reinhardt? nice! sounds like you've got the basics covered, food & water. he's probably roosting in a tree somewhere nearby. get him a few girls and a little coop and you're golden.

The Stable Horror Story(Not an actual horror story)

yeah, a lot of the barns i go to can do this. most don't unless the owner disappears for months on end, but what usually i see happen is the horse owner gets so far behind they just relinquish ownership willingly. it's rare that the barn will just up and sell the horse after a month. maybe...

    Mustang Adoptions

i got my mustang when he was 11 and had already been in captivity for 6 years. he's now 18 and to this day anyone coming onto the farm asks "who's that little guy!?!" he draws women (human and equine) to him like flies, he just has this ... prescense ... about him. there's definitely...
