    April/May Grow-a-long!

I need to get some updated pics. Sadly 1 of the cream leg bars died a little over a month ago, wasn't sure why. Still have 5, and 1 or 2 have started laying, have to setup a camera to see who is actually laying

    February/March Grow-a-long

Sadly last week our only white chicken, rapidly got sick and then died 2 days later. A few days before that she had started laying shell-less eggs. It's a shame as she laid a pretty blue egg. From our march hatch we started with 12 eggs, 1 was clear, 9 hatched, of those we had 6 roo's (kept...

My kids sent me a picture while I was at work yesterday, the lighter blue is the first from a new hen, looks like her father was also the Opel legbar. The last hen that we have from that hatch I am also expecting either a blue or olive egg from, so we came up rather blue heavy for a bunch of...

    February/March Grow-a-long

Couple of days late for posting, but we got our first egg of Friday, and she has laid one everyday since. Tiny little things, a light pale green, which was unexpected for a chicken that came from a white egg (father must have been opal legbar, only rooster that might have had blue genetics).

Well for the first time today noticed Noire (the roo we kept) taking advantage of one of the ladies. We haven't seen any eggs yet, but now at 16 weeks. How long before laying will a roo start mating?

    February/March Grow-a-long

Well for some reason or another I haven't checked this thread in awhile (forgot I guess). Of the 7 left at my last posting, we have since gotten rid of three more roosters, only keeping one. The three we got rid of 2 weeks ago. Cuprous - smallest rooster but definitely the ruler of the...

    April/May Grow-a-long!

Had to do the red light for over a week before they stopped pecking the little legbar. 3 weeks old now. Still waiting on the wife to make them as these are her chicks.

Yeah my co-worker has been taking all his roosters to a livestock auction that happens every week or 2 and at least gets a few bucks (6-10) per boy. Sadly I think that will Cuprous fate as my daughter is super attached to Noire. Still want the boy, I'll be in buffalo NY in a week or so. :gig

    February/March Grow-a-long

Well admittedly a little late but the weather held be off from working on getting their run finished but today was it. They will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. We got rid of Gir and Smitty as they were both roosters, and they weren't on the list of potential keepers. Gaz, fairly confident a pullet...

    April/May Grow-a-long!

Here's a couple of pics. Had to put them under a red light as they were picking on the one, who happens to be the smallest. Her wings are all messed up looking, hopefully they heal up quick.

    April/May Grow-a-long!

Well.. This wasn't expected. Put the 5 week old chicks (our first ever) out in the coop this morning (they do still have supplemental heat out there)... An hour later we were in the car to a farm my wife found 2 hours away.. And came home with 6 more chicks. Currently under the brooder plate...

    February/March Grow-a-long

My wife said tomorrow we are going and looking at getting more chicks...i built a coop for more than double my anticipated chicken requirement and now I'm worried it's to small

Already have at least 1 doing that but only when no one is looking so not sure which (and found out that my backyard camera audio is messed up so it isn't helpful)

    February/March Grow-a-long

We hatched out some backyard mutts from a co-worker, at first I was thinking we ended up with 6 cockerels and 3 pullets, then 4 cockerels and 5 pullets, now I'm back to 6-3 again, just different birds.... Completely clueless, we will just have to wait and see who starts laying eggs.
