We have a 2.5 year old Golden Comet or Red Star that we got when she was about 4-5 months old. We know they aren't know for having long healthy lives. Saturday she wouldn't get out of the coop, we put her down and the other girls started attacking her, so we separated her. She is acting...
Did some reading and seems this is isn't a big deal and usually heals on it's own. Saw some mentions of possibly having extra bits removed. This happened less than 24 hours ago....not sure how it happened and by the time we discovered it the bleeding had stopped on it's own, she's acting...
Wanted to follow up for the sake of completeness for others that may search and find this thread. My wife ended up taking her to the UC Davis Vet on Saturday and our chicken got the full work up. Physical exam, blood test/panel, full body radiographs, and ultrasound. They suspect salpingitis...
Appreciate the feedback from the group, wish it was better news. We have an appt at the vet on Monday to give the antibiotics a shot. She has always been super active and a great layer so hopefully she can overcome the infection.
My crew is in the midst of a heavy molting....none of the flock of 5 is really laying. My RIR is usually super active, I saw her just standing there in a daze and the other girls were checking out her backside. Kinda runny poop dribbling out a little, but this thing hanging out of her (just...
We are working through this now...only had our injured girl inside on the rainy days, otherwise she was outside in a closed off portion of the run with the other girls the entire time she has been healing. She still has a limp but she's getting around great. She seems afraid of the other...
Appreciate the feedback...she hasn't really shown any decreased energy, she's still eating like mad, laying eggs, and not a lot of mosquitos here in NorCal. But, best to take preventative measures.
Saw these bumps on her wattle the two days ago...Fowl Pox is the closest thing I've come up with from searching around, but they don't look quite the same as what I've seen online. They seemed to be bumps, sort of "popped" and are seemingly going back to normal. Being in sets of two like this...
Yeah, just decided "why not cut it open?"
It's a yolk...smooth and runny inside. If it's the chicken I think it came from, she laid us a perfect egg yesterday.
I let my girls out this morning and I was hanging out at the end of the run with them before they started free ranging, they usually hang out there and wait for their fresh water. I went to get water, came back and saw this on the ground. It was warm, bloody as you can see, and right where...
So the vet thinks it could be anatomical, but suggested we try the antibiotics in case it's a minor infection. We have 3 hens, 2 are laying. Any way to just give that water soluble antibiotic to the one chicken with a dropper or something? Don't want to throw out all the eggs.
The two that...
As is often the case, simply making an appointment with a vet will immediately decrease the symptoms. Today she is still sneezing on occasion, but back to breathing with her mouth closed and none of the yelling crazy noise. Gonna stick with the vet appointment just in case, but already seeing...
Went through that link, nothing really sounds right. She's not lethargic, no decrease in egg production, no goopy eyes, swelling, redness, etc. Just sneezing and labored breathing...and the occasional "yell"
