Eyesight problem and not co ordinated

My oldest hen appears not to be able to see. She walks into things in the garden, and is not co ordinated when she pecks - so she misses whatever she is pecking at. I am hand feeding for the time being but she is not eating much - her crop feels very empty unless I feed her. Do hens go blind...

Finally, eggs but she won't sit!

I have an issue with educating children that the way chicks are produced should be in an incubator with no mother hen to rear them. I know that this is how the majority of chicks are produced and here in the UK schools are buying into schemes where the incubator is loaned and the eggs provided...

Finally, eggs but she won't sit!

Hi 21hens...nice Avatar - I've just changed my Avatar - they are some of the ex-batts. I don't have any decent pics of the Australorps on this computer; I have 4 - they are huge! But not laying after heavy moult last October - and very short days at the moment - roll on Feb 14th! However one of...

Finally, eggs but she won't sit!

hi all - I've not been on BYC for ages but interested to read this thread. Nice apology EggSighted4Life. My first natural hatching was last year - one of my Australorps went broody and I managed to get some fertile eggs for her after she sat on dummy eggs for 1 week to make sure she wanted to be...

hi - I got my first 4 australorps 10 days ago - they are amazing. The feathers on top are glossy dark green. They are about 21 weeks old and I am getting little pullets eggs - 7 so far. I had 1 to the vet last night as I was really worried about her - she had poop round her vent and on her...

Poultry Fly Strike...a cautionary tale with GRAPHIC photo progression.

hi all. Reading this avidly as have just come back from New York (Sons wedding) to find my favourite in a bad way. We had house sitters for the 6 days we were away but they had not noticed the flies buzzing around her back end - it was the first thing I noticed. When I looked she had a large...

How do you feed OATS to chickens?

Hello. I feed my 9 hens 3 handfuls dry organic oats first thing - I put the oats on a couple of heavy metal trays; they have organic groats throughout the day in bird feeders and layers pellets in a big feeder; they don't eat many pellets. In the evening they have 2 large handfuls oats mixed...

    hen laying yolk/white/shell separately

hi Aart...she is a rescue hen from a free range farm so not sure if she has been a good layer up to now. She moulted a bit a few weeks ago and is getting some new feathers now, but not a dramatic moult like one of the others who is nearly bare. I have 5 hens who are all the same so it is...

    hen laying yolk/white/shell separately

yesterday hen had watery poop with few bits in it. She was quiet and tucked up outside so brought her in.Feathers round rump bit sticky so rinsed them off. She then perched in bathroom for a couple of hours. I felt round her vent and abdomen having looked up for some ideas online but it all felt...

should i get some more ?

Thanks both. I found a good thread on BYC and I don't think we're talking about the same thing. The eglu cube is just a roosting place - it isn't even on the floor - the hens access it by a ladder when they roost. The space where they roam from 6am to bedtime is about 450 feet by 120 feet - so...

should i get some more ?

Hi Chickencanoe and Aart thanks for getting back to me and you have confirmed my thoughts. The cube is 6 square feet of roosting - 32"x27" then there is an egg laying area off that thru a porthole which is 12"x27" the hens are quite small and seem to move around easily so I would be surprised...

    Advice needed for Rescued Hen

I am absolutely no expert - I can only say what happened to my hens and they defo had tapes after Panacur The vet advised not to use the eggs after Panacur. Dawg53 advised me re what to give for the tapeworms - his threads are really good.

should i get some more ?

Hi everyone. I got my first hens 6 weeks ago. I started with 8 rescues but sadly 3 died. My eglu cube will take up to 10 hens depending on size. I was advised that it is best to have enough hens to keep them warm in the cube - which is why I took 8 to start with. The hens free range all day in...

    Advice needed for Rescued Hen

Hi Elaine - keep up the good work. Just wanted to say the vet also prescribed Panacur for my rescue hens - it got rid of the roundworms fine but didn't touch the tapeworms so I had to give another wormer - I would have preferred to use just one wormer - especially as my hens are laying so more...

hello. I read a review about these before and thought they were a good choice. I am a new chicken keeper and have started with ex battery hens - which I think are golden comet - I have had lots of issues with them but have quickly learnt a lot so hopefully when I increase my flock I will be more...

    tape worm question

Dawg53 thank you very much for the very helpful reply. Just a last question if you don't mind. Some of the eggs in the droppings move and climb up the blades of grass so are these immature tape worms. Some just look like eggs with no movement. I saw a post somewhere about dwarf tapeworms that...

    tape worm question

Yes I will give the Equimax as soon as it comes - hopefully tomorrow as ordered yesterday. Is it usual to see so many worms in the droppings even before the wormer is given?
