    Standard hen mothering bantam hens

Hi, I have a ten year old standard Easter Egger who has started mothering the rest of the flock -- 5 bantams. Some background -- the EE has always been dominant -- not letting the other hens on the highest roost, picking feathers, guarding food etc. She has never raised chicks or spent much...

Update: Poults 2 days old -- Turkey eggs under broody chicken -- advice?

Hi, I have a great broody hen and decided to try 6 turkey eggs under her. They are due to hatch in a few days. My plan is to move the mother and poults from the nest box to a 3x3 covered pen with shavings and straw after they hatch. About the risk of blackhead, I'll give the babies a medicated...

Chick with one pink foot and asymetrical coloring

Hi, one of my 5 week old EE chicks has one pink foot and one yellow foot. Some of its feather color patterns are asymetrical. (one shoulder black, one shoulder white) Does this condition have a name?

What gender are we -- 8 week old EE

Hello, Two chicks hatched at the end of June -- the one with green legs -- pictured first -- still has a small pale comb. The one with the yellow legs has had a reddish comb for a couple weeks, but it looks the same to me as the one with green legs. Any chance the one with yellow legs is a...

    Two broodies hatching together

One hen started out brooding four eggs. Then another hen -- the one on the left -- a notorious broody, stole an egg and started brooding in the adjacent nest box. So we divided the eggs between them. Now it is hatch day and the chicks are already swapping mothers. The one on the right has...

Odd silkie behaviors: starting a list

Would you people experienced with silkies be interested in posting the odd silkie behaviors you've observed? I am raising a silkie for the first time -- it hatched at the end of August about a week before the other eggs in the nest, so we brought it into a brooder. When we tried to put it...

Feather duster buddy for lonely chick: pics

We have a silkie inside and it is seems to really like this homemade feather duster! During the day it pecks at it and tries to pull the feathers out. At night it sleeps under it (there is a heater under the brooder). So cute. I'm just thrilled he has a "friend".

    Stuffed animal for lone chick

We have a silkie that's been on its own for a week. It seems to be bonding with this stuffed bear. Last night I put the bear in the tank and this morning when I came down it was resting its head against it. Anyone else had luck with this?

Too late in season to hatch with a broody in Vancouver, BC?

Hello, I have a hen that just went broody (Aug. 13). If we start eggs now, it will be getting cold before the chicks are fully feathered. I live near Vancouver, BC and my coop is unheated. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with hatching at this time of year? Thanks.

One hatched 5 days early under broody!

Hi, has anybody had this happen? We were expecting a hatch this Saturday, and I just heard peeping from the henhouse -- one chick is hatched! This is my first time hatching eggs with a broody chicken. Backstory: We got 6 eggs from an amateur breeder on -- he got 2 from the coop and 4 from in...

Crowing hen -- caught on video

Our hen "Vulture" started crowing a couple of weeks ago! Today I was able to run to the window and catch her with my video camera. Link: http://jensenschickens.blogspot.com/ She's a year old and has been laying eggs regularly, I think. I heard that this can be the result of a hormonal...

Unrefrigerated eggs: is there an official resource on this topic?

Hello, I have a blog about my suburban chicken experience (http://jensenschickens.blogspot.com/). A couple of my readers have expressed concern that I don't wash or refrigerate my fresh chicken eggs. I've read quite a few of the posts on this forum and decided not to remove the bloom, but does...

Straw over cement slab in backyard?

Hi, This is my first winter with chickens and I'm trying to figure out how to manage their free-range area. They're out in the backyard all day, but tend to hang around on the 12' x 12' cement slab by their coop (right by our stairs). The poop all over the cement is driving me crazy, so I'm...

Flock of four - what breed/s?

Hi, we are 5 month old pullets. Some guesses on the breeds of chicks from the same seller that looked similar included Polish cross, Silky/EE cross, and Jersey Giant. We are all purchased at an auction in Langley, British Columbia. The whole flock (at 20 weeks): Penguin (23 weeks): Looked...

New to chickens -- will they walk up a ramp to lay eggs?

Hello, I've put nesting boxes in the henhouse for my 18 week old pullets. I'm wondering if my chickens will go through the trouble of walking up a ramp to go in and lay eggs. Currently they roam our backyard from 9am to 4pm and go into the run occasionally for feed or to get out of the rain...

ISA Red Cross -- updated pics at 9 weeks

This is the first chick I hatched from an egg. I hear it may be an "ISA Red Cross" but -- I'm mainly wondering about gender since we can only keep hens. Any guesses? At 2.5 weeks: At 6 weeks:

Spur bumps on 4-6 week chicks

Hi, I have a dozen mixed-breed chicks 4-6 weeks old that I bought at an auction. Some behave like roosters and/or have pink combs developing. However, they ALL have spur bumps. Do pullets develop spur bumps this early or am I going to end up with a bunch of roosters?!
