    Bearer of bad news...

I gentleman wanted to buy one of my Welsummer hens, and today I took her to her new home. The man was very nice, and soooo happy to be getting a 'girl' for his Wellie rooster. The chicken set-up was clean and nice...he even had a space for the new girl to settle into before he put her in with...

Black Australorp chicks...one is cockerel *sigh

My 2 black Australorps chicks are from a roo from the stock of the late Warren Simm (anyone heard of him...he was well-known in eastern Canada for his Australorps, but not sure if he was known outside of Canada or not) and I was so happy to get them both the end of April. They are now about 9...

    Sourdough for chickens?

I make sourdough bread, and as such, each day or so I feed my starter by throwing some out and then adding more flour and warm water. I know my chickens like yoghurt, so I started to wonder...is the fermented starter safe for them? Does anyone know if this might not be safe?

    Hememora or Isbars ?

I just came across a site where they sold these birds (amougst others); I hadn't heard of them before, but they are very expensive! $399 for a juvenile pair!! Anyone know these chickens?

    Are Welsumers a 'Heritage' breed?

I've just read the definition that is generally accepted to mean 'heritage', and now I'm confused; are Wellies considered to be a heritage breed?

    Silly DH

My first egg was Christmas morning, and most days since I have found an egg; Friday I got two. I was excited to get them ( and still am), but it was always ME who found them. I was feeling rather bad that DH hadn't found one himself, as he's the one who has done the most work on the coop...

    Laying pullets still on grower

Is it ok to keep feeding my girls (3 Welsummers...2 laying, as of today) the grower I have? I'd like to use it up before I buy layer for them; they get kitchen leftovers every day...and spouts every other day. Egg shells are dried, crumbled and thrown in with the scraps. Grit is freely...

    Roosting, or not?

I was later than usual closing the window on the coop last night, and when I did go out to do it, I noticed one lady up on the roost, but couldn't tell if there was only 1 or if perhaps there were 2 up there. This morning when DH went out, he said all 3 girls were on the floor, sleeping...

    Still not finished... :(

Well, DH said the coop and run would be finished before the snow flies, and we're expecting flurries today. The run has no harware cloth around it yet and the girls are cooped up inside...sigh. [/img]

    Worming at POL?

I just read on another post that someone worms her chickens just before they start to lay so as not to have to throw away any eggs; does everyone do this as a matter of course? my ladies are now 19 weeks old and I do not feed medicated feed. I have been trying to stay away from drugs...

    Do they need oysters?

I know that oyster shell is recommended for the calcium needs of layers, but would giving them egg-shell provide enough calcium? I've been saving egg-shells for a while, drying them out, then crushing them with a rolling pin. Do I have to buy oyster shell? Is there anyone who doesn't give...

    Difference between grower and layer?

I'm ready to make the switch to grower from starter, but is the main difference between grower and layer the protein content? The girls are not ready to lay yet, (only 14 weeks old), so is there any advantage in buying layer yet? Should I make the switch now to grower?

    Peat moss ?

I was visiting a friend yesterday and he told me that he used peat moss as bedding in his coop when he had chickens. Right now I use wood shavings that I buy at the feed store, but the idea of peat is intriguing; peat is very absorbent. Is there some reason it would be dangerous? maybe even...

    Are the cold...

...or just trying to make me feel guilty? Last night the temperature had dropped a bit, and the girls (who are still in the garage, by the way) were asleep at their usual time. This morning when I went out they were huddled together as if they were cold. "Come on" I told them, "it wasn't like...

    Chickens and cats

My girls are not outside on their own yet (they are 9 weeks old), but I'm wondering: at what age/size would neighbourhood cats lose interest in them? They are LF Welsummers. I am thinking ahead to the day I can let them out for a few hours before dusk (after their new coop is finished) as...

    Double post...ignore this please

I bought a 'playhouse' from the local high school shop class and since mid-June it has been sitting in our driveway. We finally were able to get a boom truck to move it into our yard. It was too heavy for us old folks to lift, and it needed to be lifted over an arbor to be put in place. The...

    Another ACV question

I've been putting ACV in my three 5-weeks olds' water since we got them at 2 days old. I've read somewhere on here that some people do not do that ALL the time, just a week or so each month. I also put it in my dogs' water, and my budgie's water. Is there a reason why I shouldn't give it to my...

    What do you think...

I bought a 'playhouse' from the local high school to use as a coop for our 3 Welsummers. It is 4' x7' outside dimension, divided into a 'porch' area and an area which a little girl would use as a house, divided by a half-wall. My question is this: the inside dimensions of the 'house' side are...

    Sand question

We were at the beach today and I scooped up a bit of sand, thinking my 3 two-week old girls could use it as grit, which I understand they need if I offer anything other than their starter. My question is whether I should wash the sand first; is there anything in sand from an ocean beach which...
