I am in lexington, my chickens didn't like yesterday's 2" of snow, suspect the 8 to 18 expected tomorrow will really freak them out. plan on tarping part of their run tonight to give them a little more snow free space.

What breed and gender is this???

most certainly a roo, most certainly a mix. don't think I would care to guess but does appear to have barred rock. the barring could be from other species but with the yellow legs too, I feel pretty good on that one.

Comment by 'smarsh' in article 'Water in the Winter'

i didn't get too far into this, should be working, don't tell the boss. While it may be true that some animals drink more in the winter, I can tell you, as a sweating mammal, that I do not and neither does our horse. High humidity with heat actually makes us sweat more in an attempt to cool.

    What predator is this

raccoons take it with them more than not. I have experienced birds taken by raccoons, weasel/minks, possoms foxes, owls, and hawks. A raccoon will usually eat more than that, they are a big animal, and usually leave with it. Every kill that I had proof of a mink being the culprit, the victim was...

    increased hawk aggression

Mary is correct, going up in the 60s and 70s, I rarely saw a cooper's hawk, I think the accipter family, of which it belongs, was harder hit by ddt due to their diet of mostly birds that had a lot of ddt in their system. DDT's destructive property wasn't that it killed the birds but made their...

    increased hawk aggression

cooper's hawks generally hunt on the move, they aim to surprise birds that they come upon. But they can also lay in wait at bird feeders and the like where they know birds will congregate. Your soaring hawks of which the Red-tailed is either soar, sometimes at very high altitudes, or perch. the...

    increased hawk aggression

I don't know if it is an increase in numbers, thus competition for food, or just city hawks that are used to people, or what. After 8 years with only one hawk attack of no consequence, I can't leave them out for 5 minutes any more. I can't count the number of attacks in the last year, but I know...

The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I kind of agree too, and lets face it, the whole point of domestication was to the end of use. And the vast majority do not show. I have some problem with the breeding to standard at the detriment of the chicken being useful otherwise. The inbreeding that is necessary for this doesn't create a...
