I just had a guinea keet hatch FIVE days early, and yes I triple checked my math. I was about to remove the turners when i heard peeping and there was a little guy hanging out between the turners. He has a small part of his yolk sack still out (almost looks umbilical cord like), but is doing...
I couldn't believe it! My first seven guinea eggs that I incubated hatched 7/7! I was worried none would hatch because I wasn't sure my humidity was perfect.
Five hatched great one their own (one a day early, and hes huge). One needed slight assistance, he pipped, but seemed to quit, so after...
If you just let brand new guineas roam free from day one, chances are by day three you'll never see them again. You need to "train" them. I put mine in their coop for around a month, then for a week I open their coop door and let them into a temporary run during the day and then feed them and...
This is my "teenager box." I bought it off any older gentleman at a buy sell trade for $15. I scrubbed it and painted it. it has a good amount of space, I keep food and water on one side and leave the other side open for exercise. I also have a small run I can attach to it so that they can get...
Here is my brooder. I made it from a shipping crate box I got out of the trash pile at work. I used thin wood strips and chicken wire to make the lid and have tie wire with snaps to put over the lid to ensure any predators can't get it open.
I plan to hang my heat lamp from ceiling so I can...
First time hatching eggs on my own, and my first seven were due today! One strong (and large) keet was born on Saturday afternoon and five more hatched yesterday. I couldn't be more excited! I really had no confidence that any would hatch, but so far 6/7 are happy and moved into brooder. We will...
This is our current favorite recipe! This feeds two people with some left overs!
Bang Bang Chicken!
Ingredients
1/2 lb of spaghetti
4-5 boneless chicken tenderloins, chopped
1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
3 tsp paprika
1 Tablespoon fresh parsley
Black pepper to taste...
I built my guinea's coop inside an old corn crib. Its about 6x5' and maybe 10' tall. I used chicken wire and tin to predator proof the entire thing (it wasnt quite finished in the pic). I put several roosts at varying heights and a shelf for them to hang out on. The shelf is above the feeder and...
I have 11 guineas that free range our farm (and get locked in their coop at night). I've currently got about 30 eggs in the incubator, and want to add some of the "new ones" to my flock once they are old enough. Any advice on the best and safest way to integrate? I've got a few ideas, but want...
Hello! Southwestern PA here! I am fairly new to BYC and brand new to the PA thread. I've got four chickens and eleven guinea fowl. I've also go about 31 guinea eggs in the incubator and hoping for my first batch to hatch in two weeks! :)
Can some one clarify what breeds I have here? I think Rose (red one) is a Rhode Island Red, then I am not sure about Blanche (black one), I think Sophia (brown) is a Sussex and am not sure about Dorthy (gray).
Sorry for the poor pic of Blanche, she hates the camera.
I have 11 guineas that are around 2.5 months old and one has developmental issues. We call him Weeble. He is smaller and much more round that the rest of the flock. He also weebles - woobles - waddles when he walks. He can fly just fine, and is always in the roosts at night, but we notice he...
He is around! He actually brooded my current chickens (along with additions to his flock) and my guineas. He gave me all of his hatching equipment and books, and gives me pointers!
I have my hatching room and brooder all set, so I can only hope I get a decent hatch rate with my first try!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up on a farm and we had chickens my entire life. I fed them and gathered eggs, but didn't get very interested until my husband and I got our own farm. Growing up my dad also raised pheasants, turkey, quail and a few...
Hi, I am looking for a place to order the starter feed for my keets (I know chick starter is not high enough in protein for them). Can anyone suggest any websites that offer quality feed at a reasonable price.
Thanks! My first batch is due to hatch around June 12.
