Has anyone had any success in teaching their chickens tricks? I was wondering whether it was possible, as I would like to teach my chickens some... if its at all possible.
Thanks!
I'm about half way done building my coop and I'm not sure wether I need to insulate it or not. Need some help!
The summers here are usually anywhere between 70ºF to 95ºF and the winters can get down to about 10ºF. I will have three Rhode Island Red/cross chickens in a 3 foot by 5 foot...
I went to Home Depot today and bought the roof for my coop. The roof will be wooden shingles, like this -

Only problem - They're CEDAR!!!!
I've heard that cedar is bad for the chickens...
Hey Everyone!
I came here a few days ago and asked about how to cure my chicks feet after he hatched with a foot deformity. The chicks feet now look 95% normal. Thanks for your help! If you would like to see what his feet look like now, he is this video (linked below) He is the one that...
One out of the seven chicks who I had hatched with deformed feet and will not eat anything. The foot problem is already being addressed from help here. She is wearing adorable little shoes.
However, she still won't eat anything. She has been hatched for about 28 hours now, so there is...
This was my first hatch for my new pet chickens and I am very happy to have 7 out of 12 of them hatch! However, theres still five that didn't. On the 20th day I saw an egg move, but that egg never hatched. Day 21 was on Saturday, ( April, 24 ) and the last chick hatched today ( day 23 ) I...
My chicks started hatching on April 24th, which was the 21st day. The last one hatched today around 11am ( April 26th, 23rd day). He was very slow to hatch, it took about 24 hours. When I took him out of the incubator, I noticed both of his feet were deformed. The toes are all curled inward...
I am in the process of building my coop at the moment. The coop is 3 feet X 5 feet and the run is 8 feet X 5 feet. I know the general guidelines are 4 square feet per bird in the coop and 10 square feet in the run. So, at the moment I could have 3 birds in the coop and 4 in the run. ( not...
I have one chick who hatched about an hour ago. Its peeping a lot! Its about 1/3 dry and he is walking all over the bator knocking the eggs over. Two other eggs have pipped, but I can't see inside yet.
Can I take him out?
Thanks!
I was staring into my incubator today and I kept seeing the eggs moving. After a bit of hard listening, I even heard a few peeps! Its day 20, so they could pip any minute now! Its driving me insane! I want to see my chicks!
Who else is waiting for pipping!?
Has anyone here ever made little 'paper towel boats'? I am folding paper towels into a little square with sides taped up. They are to help avoid the chicks playing soccer with the eggs and so they don't bump into each other as much.
Just checking to make sure it won't cause any problems I...
Took my first trip to Home Depot this afternoon and got lots of wood to start my first coop!
I will be using 1/2" Hardware cloth to enclose my run, however I can't seem to find washers the right size. I found washers that would cover the spacing in the cloth, but then the hole in the center...
I heard somewhere that pullets will grow their feathers in faster than the roos do. Is this true?
I was wondering because I have two RIR chicks and they are 17 days old. One of them has a lot more feathers than the other. The one that does have more feathers, I am hoping is a pullet. She...
I am designing and building a coop for 2-3 Rhode Island Red hens. For a visual, the coop will look something like this - https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=26162 I really like this design.
The run would be about 6 1/2 feet by 4 feet, and 6 feet tall. With a 2 feet space...
I am on day 12 with my incubator hatching some chicks! However, the incubator humming is driving me insane.
It starts out with a loud RHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... then goes to a low hmmmmmmm... then stops... 2ish minutes later its.. RRHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMhmmmmmmmmmmmm
I may be asking too much...
Instead of digging down and putting hardware cloth underground, would it be okay to keep the hardware cloth ground level and have a few inches of sand on top? It would be held in by the base of the coop. The ground here would take ages to dig through all the roots and rocks and my parents aren't...
I am building my first coop in the next few weeks for 2-3 Rhode Island Reds. Home Depot sells boards in which one side is covered just like a class room white board is. Which I would imagine is much easier to clean than wood or painted wood. I am thinking very seriously about putting these...
I am incubating 12 eggs that are on day 10. I just got a Hydrometer to find that the humidity is at 70%. TOO HIGH!!!
The water is on the bottom of the 'bator in the canals under the wire and eggs. I'm not sure how to get the water out without disturbing the eggs too much.
Any tips or...
( I originally posted this in another category, however I don't think I posted it in the right one. )
A friend of mine had 8 chicks hatch on April 1. They said they had a "mean one" and they couldn't keep him with the other chicks. So, they gave the "mean one" and another chick to me on...
