I was just at a local poultry auction and was over the moon that not only was there Bearded Silkies, but I managed to win the bid on one! I have never seen one where I am in Western Australia, and few people have them.
Pullet, age unknown but not quite as big as my laying silkie girls.
I'm...
For the first time I can remember, my local pet store started to stock live Mealworms. The feed stores around here don't stock them live as far as I can find, so this store currently has a monopoly. And they are very pricey. Even a small container of tiny ones just feels so expensive for what is...
A few recent changes in my flock have forced me to have to rethink my 2021/2022 breeding plans. Breeding season where I am starts around August so not long now.
I'm sorry if this is a huge ramble.
The change in question is my two Frizzle hens, who are half silkie, not laying the same colour...
I'm looking to hatch out some bearded silkie eggs but having no luck finding a source for eggs.
If anyone is in Australia and can ship eggs, or knows someone who is and can, please let me know!
I'm specifically looking for:
Bearded silkies, with lots of floof!
Silver Partridge ideally, but I'm...
I've been making chicken themed designs to sell on Teespring for a little extra money (to spend on chickens lol).
No pressure or anything to buy, but I though you guys might like to at least see them ^-^
I only have Faverolles hens up so far, Ive got to wait until my paypal is approved on the...
The three first babies I bred went to their new mum yesterday. We are still confused what colour one of them actually is so we thought we would ask you guys ^-^. My friend will be joining the forum soon hopefully. Turns out she already had an account from years ago lol. @HiddlesKenway

I'm not sure how or when, but today I noticed one of my hens was sitting weird and the rooster kept mating with her because she wouldn't or couldn't get up. I moved her into my newly set up brooder (chicks due next week) to at least give her a break from the rooster.
Her right leg seems sore...
I just lost my first baby chick T-T
I got up and let the chooks out, then checked on broody mama and babies. One of them was tangled in her foot feathers and already dead. The feathers were wrapped tightly around its neck. I am so upset. Is there anything I could have done or can do to prevent...
I just wanted to check with more experienced peeps before moving my mamma hen and her 5 and 6 day old chicks back outside.
I moved them inside initially to make mamma hen stay on her pipping eggs she kept abandoning. The following several days have been very cold and wet.
I have a rent...
Its covered in tiny fractures that are only easily visible when candling. I initially thought they were veins until I noticed the tiny hole. No chick in sight. The other last egg has movement when candled. Other chicks hatched last night and the day before. I really don't want to discard if it...
Sorry its not the greatest pic, but this Silkie X Frizzle (pekin/cochin mix) chick hatched last night. Mum is blue, dad is splash. Is it a dark blue or somehow against everything I know about the blue gene, is it black?
Here is the dad
And here is the mum
Any help would be appreciated!
All...
I have had my broody hen on eggs for 24 days now. I was worried about the eggs as I had to move them all out of the main flock on day 2 as the other hens kept kicking mama hen off the nest and laying more eggs in there. I probably had a few too many under her but I couldn't tell which were which...
So in January this year I posted about the chicks I had purchased, one of which I purchased as a "Marans or Marans X".
Well she is all grown up and laying now, and is certainly not a Marans. While I feel a bit salty about paying extra for a more expensive breed and not getting what I paid for...
So I have two cats of my own (Casper and Arya) and moved around 6 months ago into a house with my boyfriend, who has his own cat (Boi). (And then very soon got chickens!)
My cats always had their issues, but snuggled together and loved on each other all the time. My boyfriends cat was bottle...
So at about 3pm I noticed my frizzle going to try lay again (I don't know whats up, she normally is done by mid day and had already gone in twice today) and all the rest of my hens and my roo were outside eating the snack I brought them.
About half an hour later I came back out to see if an egg...
So my landlord has given permission for me to use the old shed behind my house as a coop rather than building from scratch. Pretty good timing too as its getting very wet and stormy here over the last few days, so I have moved the little coop inside the shed for now to provide more shelter.
So...
Rather than constantly bumping my intro thread, I thought I'd post updates and pictures of my chooks and progress of my coop.
So just in case you haven't seen my intro threat (wow guys so many people said hi thank you!), here are my chookies.
On day one, the small baby Coriander was 3 weeks...
I would love some help to identify a couple things.
I purchased my two chooks three weeks ago, the person who hatched was not the breeder. She said she was 90% sure they were both female but I'd love everyone else's opinions. Also I'm fairy sure my faverolles is a salmon but Im not sure, and Im...
Hi I'm Zemeraire!
I'm in Australia, and just got chickens again for the first time in a few years, and the first time that they are 100% mine and not mostly my parents!
Until the last few years when I was not living with mum, I have looked after chickens for pretty much my whole life and...
