How many can you process in one day by yourself (with a tub-plucker)?

Hi all, I am getting ready to process the 23 CX I have ready to go. I am borrowing a scalder and tub plucker from a fellow 4-H parent, and I am wondering if I am being realistic thinking I will be able to get all 23 done this weekend. I have about 4 hours on Saturday to dedicate to this...

I did it! Mr. Turkey has gone to glory.

It only took a year of mental prep and all y'alls experience hope and strength that you have graciously shared here on these boards, but I did it! A big shout out to you, Booker1 - I had your chicken tutorial up in the living room the whole time I was gutting so thank you for posting it, it...

Processing turkeys on the 12th for Thanksgiving.

I have volunteered to help a local farm process their Thanksgiving turkeys so I can learn how and also to get my own bird done while the knives ad feathers are already flying. They are planning to do it this weekend. I had really hoped to try fresh not frozen turkey this year. Is 12 days...

Adding another species to my list...

After all the possum and raccoon drama at the old place, and dog massacres at the new place, I thought I had the coop relatively secure only to be woken at 1:30 this morning to find an OWL inside the coop eating my favorite duck. An OWL!!! REALLY?!?!?! One of the pieces of tin blew off the...

    Meaties are here.

I finally caved and am going to try my hand at the Cornish-X. Ordered 25 from Welp and they arrived this morning happy and peeping at the PO. Unfortunately due to time constraints they will have to sit another 4 hours in transit before I can get them home to their 'nursery' but they have a...

Merging 2 flocks both with mature roosters?

Hi all, I am moving to a new home that has a teeny little flock (3) already established. The roo is a 2-3 year old game(hatch?)/barred rock cross and he has 2 barred rock hens. My flock has a 1 year old EE/Golden Comet cross roo and his nine 1.5 year old hens of varying breeds, (rainbow...

    Raccoons

Yes, more raccoons. They have decimated my flock. Tried everthing short of electricity which is not an option due to location. Finally locked up the survivors in dog crates and set traps. I have two trapped right now. If I shoot them and leave their bodies out behind the coop will that...

    Fear is hitting me hard.

I know this is a little off topic, but since my decision to move out of the city was made predominately to raise my own food (meat chickens especially), and knowing there are others here who have already made such a move, I am posting this here hoping to get feedback from people who understand...

    Best Lunch EVER!

Friday I roasted the last 2 of my homegrown birds, a capon and a red broiler. The first 3 were roasted right after butchering and were really really really good, but these 2 I had frozen. They had been thawing in the fridge for a couple of days and it was - you know - time to cook or...

    Capon vs Rooster

Same age, same feed, same everything but testicles. Can you spot the difference? Had a hunk off each breast and I think the capon is a little more tender, the rooster a bit more gamey, but not much at all. Both boys were DEEELICIOOOUSSSSS!!!

    I made MEAT!

I did it! Most of the McNugets I sold on the hoof, but I took the 6 remaining capons, 2 red broilers and a roo (from the McNugget bunch that I left intact as a test case) to the processing plant today. I wasn't sure what to expect but OMG it was the coolest experience EVER! Right up there...

Rouen duckling with no yellow fuzz

Hi all! One of my rouen ducklings has no yellow stripes on its face nor anywhere on its body for that matter. The only 3 ducks we have are 2 female and 1 male and they are definitely Rouens. Is this normal?

Please help with hatching Rouen duck eggs.

I have 10 in the incubator that are ready to hatch and 8 more that are on day 12. So like an idiot I opened the bator to turn the 8 and I saw a huge pip in one of the day 24 ones - the sack was ruprured and I could sorta see inside. I closed as quick as I could when I realized it. But this...

    Capon experiment on hold

It was bound to happen, but one of my neighbors turned me in. I will be moving the flock this weekend. Depending on the new setup, I may have to reduce the total number from the current 80+ to 50. (Anybody out there want a silver or blue wheaton ameraucana rooster?) :-) I have done 20...

    Ideal red broilers

DD wanted some Sultans so for S&Gs I added 5 red broilers to her order. They sent some packing peanuts, too, brown leghorns I think. Welllll - at 1 week the broilers tower over the others. It's like watching 5 sumo wrestlers in with a crowd of normal sized humans. Of course the packing...

Dog attack, broken wing. What to do?

The 9 week olds keep sneaking out of their pen and the dog thinks they are the funnest squeeky toys ever. The dog does not bother the big chickens except to steal their food, but these bite sized morsels are too exciting for him to restrain himself. Two days ago he got to 2 of them. One of...

    Under the radar...

I am thinking about adding a couple of turkeys to the flock but since I am running under the radar so I was wondering how noisy they are? I have a couple of rouen duck hens that are real squawkers, but their voices normally don't carry to the front yard. The OEGB roo talks a bit but he's...

    Sultans?

I looked through the breeeders list and did not see any Sultans. Any ideas where else to look besides hatcheries?

    Sultans?

Anyone breed Sultans? On a whim, we got some bantams from Ideal last summer, and they are cute but now DD wants to get into breeding them. (give me strength...) Any info on breeders of standards or bantys would be appreciated.

    Labelling to sell to friends

Hi - My daughter is planning to sell our extra eggs and wants to work up a stickey label to apply to her cartons. Besides the name of her 'business', what other data needs to be on the label? Safe handling procedures, I would guess. And any pictures of your own designs would be lovely. :-)
