I don’t add garlic. The only time I give garlic is with ACV dose for new quarantined birds or for worm sign. As for red pepper flakes- they can have plenty and it’s beneficial in moderation. A sprinkle goes a long way.
After a few years I’ve settled on this:
Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve layer feed, stretched with Nutrena Country Feeds layer pellets.
I add:
- Red pepper flakes
- Basil
- Oregano
- Thyme
- Crushed egg shells
- Grit
- Soldier fly larvae
- Cinnamon (sometimes)
- Sage (sometimes)
I put it all mixed...
I recently saw a comment on the BYC Facebook mentioning the spices (and health benefits) they add to their birds feed.
I’ve been reading up on this but would like to hear your experience with it. Red pepper, oregano, garlic, cilantro, thyme? What’s your take and how did it affect your chickens...
I do hanging planters on corners like this- these are my sweet alyssums. I like to pick out the bee’s favorites. This way the area is prettier, the birds love the scent, and I help out our pollinator friends. I also do window coconut planters on the coop to make it more homey.
I believe those are both cockerels. Almost certain the bottom one circled is, and skeptical of the other.
How many ladies are around? I’ve noticed cockerels get spicy when they begin feeling like they need to fight over females. If you don’t mind keeping them (I kept mine), maybe consider upping...
Welcome! Congrats on your flock. Sounds like a solid crew.
My partner also has a hedgie! Tell your fiancé they would love a chinchilla if they love hedgies.
Glad to have another gamer here. I’ve been enjoying TotK and plan on a 100% complete so I’m still playing after months.
Good luck with...
Shipped to CT successfully. Heating pack was still warm. Each pullet healthy, alert and content!
One Frizzle Easter Egger, one Green Queen banty, and one Exchequer Leghorn. I’m sure you guys know who’s who! They will be joining my black Australorp/blue Orpington/Dominique crew!

That is a lot yes. Our local feed store sells me my oyster shells for $1 per pound, and even that is high compared to what it used to be. I don’t mind it though, $15 for 15 lb bag of clean healthy crushed shells done deal!
I’ve noticed that among flocks, symptoms can vary from bird to bird after toxic consumption. For example I’ve seen coccidiosis wreak havoc on one bird and not even touch another. So she may be trying to recover from the onion (read about heinz body anemia- a serious side effect of onion...
It could be a neurological condition, but those are hard to diagnose without a vet. Worst case scenario- Marek’s disease. What are you feeding her? Have you checked for Bumblefoot? Sometimes when it gets bad, they lose function in legs. Is there a vet you can call or make appointment with?
2 weeks is plenty of time to see results. What kind of vitamins are you using? I use Poultry Cell (a good all-around). What does her poop look like? Also keep in mind most vets (even vets that don’t see chickens) will accept a stool sample drop off for testing.
Looking to seed my free range area this month! Having difficulty picking out a good all-around foraging seed for my poultry that wouldn’t be harmful to my horses if they snacked on it while walking by.
Context: this area is dedicated for my poultry and their foraging needs. My horses only walk...
Just recently joined the community and am happy to see a thread like this. Fellow NDs- how do you cope with losing a bird? High empathy= horrible grief. Thoughts?
