There is no problem with breeding splash to black to produce good blues...that is what most top breeders do, and breeding blue to black to improve type is common, but ...In my opinion, that is the very reason none of our birds have true lacing, and they never will in using that method...my point...

Thank you...he was nice...he does have barring going on...very similar to lacing genetically....not sure what you consider 'clear bluish slate' per the SOP, but that looks pretty close to me...it certainly is not what I would call 'pale blue'....I have shown you, using your own reference...

We already know that self-blue to self-blue will impact feather quality and self-blue is just another dilute gene. And, eventually, the blue might become so light as to be unrecognizable. If I had enough years left, and the space to do it, it would be very interesting to see the F3 or F4...

Reading the APA standard, the description of body color refers to page 37 - the blue Columbian. The SOP for blue does not refer to 'Columbian'...it is referring you to page 37 which is the description of blue under the heading of the blue variety of Plymouth Rock...I believe the intent was to...

I believe all blue chickens trace the dilute gene to Andalusian...I think we do need the Andalusian to get true lacing...some breeders are using Wyanndotts to get it...a geneticist once described edging / lacing to me this way...pull a feather and place it on a white piece of paper...if the...

Interesting read on the Kipenjungle site...if you continue to read there, it states that to get the true lacing described in the SOP, you need Ml,Pg, and Co, .... : Complex patterns: Meant are black patterns on individual groundcolored feathers, not the dark/melanized versions of wildtype up...

Breeding to black will not affect the 'lacing' much....it may help to reduce the dilution by the blue gene, but to get true lacing, you need the pattern gene, and probably Co..this is Andalusian blue lacing

the shade doesn't matter...you should be looking for an even shade all over the bird, with a black lacing around the edge...dark is my preference...seems to show better contrast to the lacing..

I got silvers from fowlstuff last spring and they were a little flighty as chicks, but as adults they come running to me..I can pick most of them up in the yard and I don't treat them as pets...

At 6 months, he looks very good to me, very good type body, nice well defined comb. Hope he grows a tail, and it will come up some. You can see a nice muff and beard in the straight on pics...If he grows a tail, he will defiantly be a keeper.. If your birds usually have better tails, I wouldn't...

I think you missread that...they said if it is not a recognized color, wheaten for example,..then it's not pure. meaning wheaten is an example of a recognized color...

My best guess is cockerel, based on comb, tail length and leg size..that's a guess though, I would not say for sure without better pics...

I like the black..seems from the pic to have more body substance and be a little longer, but he still has a better balanced look...The blue is good too..maybe keep him for a back up in case something happens to the black???

Very hard to determine for sure E vrs ER without genetic testing ...speculation is that E (Extended Black) –black/cream day-old chicks, adults predominantly black, but may have some pheomelanin (silver or gold) areas in hackles. ER (Birchen)- black/cream day-old chicks, adults predominantly...
