    Dirty coons!

I had a roo that was killed by a coon> thank God my daughter wasn't there. she cried hard enough just when i told her! i can't imagine how she would react if she saw Bill's body (or at lest what was left of it). i still think about him. He was my favorite rooster. When my first hen was brooding...

You shouldn't be to mad at the rooster. He just might have thought the the baby was a thret. She could have run towards him too fast, you never know.

    spurs?

nope, he's a rooster. he has a big comb, big wattles, sickle feathers, and has fathered 4 babies. the only other chickens i had were the two bantam hens, and no other rooster in the pen to fertilize eggs. so i'm sure he's a male, but he sure acts like a female in the nest. he mates with the...

    spurs?

while we're on spurs, why doesn't my rooster have any? spot is 10 months old, and has procreated quite well, but there are still no spurs, not even "nubbies". he also gets in the nest box, tries to roll an egg under him, and makes those purring sounds that hens make. my daughter and i joke...

what to use to seal/paint plywood coop?

thanks, everyone. my plywood isn't so pretty, either, so that's why i was hoping to put color on the coop. i hadn't thought about putting any kind of sealer on the frame of the run, since it's treated, but now i think i should probably do that, too. after the painting is done, i've only got...

what to use to seal/paint plywood coop?

thank you. so that holds up well against the elements? my folks have been freaking me out, telling me that you can't paint plywood, it will still soak up water. i was beginning to worry that i hadn't built it right. you didn't have to put any kind of sealant on it before you painted it, did...

what to use to seal/paint plywood coop?

hi, all. i am trying to finish the coop part of my tractor. i used treated lumber for the framework of the pen, but bought untreated plywood for the coop. (didn't want the babies to be inside with a lot of fumes.) but now i don't know what to paint or seal the outside of the coop with. if...

    My Chicken Coop (New Photos)

hi, scott. great looking coop, AND both avatars. i am just finishing my tractor, and am stumped as to what to paint/seal the coop with. the coop is built of untreated plywood, and i need to get it waterproofed. i was hoping to paint it barn red, but i don't know if that's possible and still...

Am i the only one who has never ate a homegrown chicken?

i have never eaten home grown chicken. i USED to eat store-bought chickens, until my best buddy Bill was killed. now every time i see a piece of chicken, i see him in my arms after he died. however, i do think it's better to eat food raised by your own hands. healthier for us, better for the...

    Rooster Spurs?

at what age will the roosters have actual spurs? my Spot is 7 months old, and all he has still is a bump. he also sets in the nest and coos sometimes. what does THAT mean?

    can i have a vote

not vegetarian or vegan...yet. although after my Billy (rooster/baby) was killed, and i carried his mutilated body in my arms for an hour, i have not been able to eat any more chicken. i tried to once, right after he was killed, and all i could see was my Billy's body every time i tried to put...

    Weird yawning thing!

my chickens do this, too. i have been afraid that it's gapeworms, and have been trying to find out what to do about it. i found a thread that says to use "iron of turpentine", but can't find out what that is or where to get it. and my local tractor supply has NOTHING for worming chickens...
