    Live chick during eggtopsy

I had one hatch a week after I patched it. Mother duck hatched some babies and left the rest of the eggs for dead. I found one with a quarter size hole in it and patched it. It and the 4 other eggs hatched. It was the first one out of the shell. I boiled the shell before I super glued it...

    Emergency! Dosage for Baytril pills

Do you have a tractor supply in your area? They carry antibiotics for farm animals. Also some pet stores have antibiotics for birds and fish. A duck is about the size of a parrot. Usually bird antibiotics are put in the water. You might not find Baytril but maybe tetracycline or something...

    Flaked Corn versus Cracked Corn

I feed whole corn along with layer. I had a problem with the cracked corn being moldy. With the whole corn I have not had that problem. Plus it is cheaper and they are able to pick it up easier. Less mess with whole corn and layer pellets.

Good New and Bad News- Those poor ducklings :(

Mail trucks are not heated or air conditioned. For safe live delivery it is best to order during mild climate months-not mid winter or in the heat of the summer. It is just too risky of stress death during those times. I hope the rest of the ducklings are doing well. I now buy local...

Advice for culling decisions - Who to keep?

I have a hard time keeping enough girls for my boys. I would not get rid of any females-young or old. Keeping a good ratio is difficult. Mine are for pets and eggs but I keep all females and give away a drake now and then.

    Duck Hatchery?

Rural King usually gets ducklings in late Feb or March. They have a minimum of 2 where I live. Shipping is just so high on 3 ducklings and it is unsafe with these temps. The trucks are not heated and they can easily freeze to death. That is why they want to ship 15-20 at a time. I would...

Has anyone orderd ducks from Estes Hatchery?

Just a warning. It is mid winter and unless they ship with a heat pack, they could easily die. If you wait until warmer weather the chances of them making it are much better. I work for the USPS. They are shipped in unheated trucks. It is best not to order in the cold winter or hot summer.

    Some duck photos and questions.

I have both. Personally I like the Campbells better. My KC are friendlier. They are also much quieter. The WH lay larger eggs, though. WH are also good mommas. But, and this is a big but. My neighborhood hawk loves eating the WH. The white in the summer is good target. Winter there is...

    Soft shell eggs?

I battle this also. I always buy layer feed and also provide additional calcium. Also are you throwing their shells back to them. Mine eat up all the egg shells I give them.

    Anyone seen this before?

Get some poultry electrolytes and probiotics. I always use it for ducklings. I use Merrick's blue ribbon poultry electrolytes, but any brand will do. Usually the ones with the head down is submissive showing female. Thawed peas will also perk them up.

My first batch of golden 300 hybrids: The good, the bad and the ugly

From what I read they are a mix of 2 different duck breeds - first generation. They do not breed true and the offspring of golden 300 are not suppose to produce as many eggs. I believe they call it hybrid vigor. Could some of your food have gone bad. Mold? Losing half your flock is really...

    day 5 candling

Sounds to me like your incubator settings are off or you are not keeping the proper humidity. I had to lower my temp on my incubator after the first try failed. Do you have a hygrometer to test the humidity? Best of luck

    Duck not eating new feed

I would only mix 1/4 of the new food with 3/4 of the layer pellets for a week or two. Then next week make it 1/2 and 1/2. The following week. 3/4 new food and 1/4 pellets. Go slow she will adapt.
