Just so I'm clear, veterinarians who have been approved by the state they practice in should not be making recomendations on what medications are right for a specific animal and you should follow guidelines set fourth by people who have no proof of knowing anything about what they are...
And thats why making things idiot friendly is so important.
Educating them is what's important.
Saying they aren't smart enough to do it without a Vet is just condescending.
It's not brain surgery
This is the major problem with online recomendations they don't take into account one's ability to understand weights and measures
Nothing is idiot proof.
The logo on a bottle of "Ivomec" is a cow head, I will disagree politely and say it plainly states on the label it is INTENDED for cattle and swine
The picture on a bottle of Safeguard 10% liquid is a goat
The picture on a tube of Safeguard 10% paste is a horse.
The active ingredient...
There are many reasons not to dose your pet with a product intended for cattle
Ivomec is not "intended for cattle"
It's simply a drug, like any other drug, and has been proven effective on many species.
To suggest otherwise isn't realistic
It would be much like saying it's better to pay...
Why don't ya'll use the heart guard stuff that is made specificly for dogs as a preventative?
One pill once a month, safe, sure, easy and not that expensive.
This is why:
Heartguard:
6 Month Supply $48.99 Save 43% vs. Vet's price (+ Free Shipping)
50 Ml bottle Ivomec:
Ivomec Ivermectin...
Reviving this thread because I didn't find an answer to : "what about the pour on?"
It's hard enough to get an accurate dose with injectables that you can measure with a syringe.
With a pour on , your just guessing.
Stick to oral heartworm medications for the dogs
An insulin needle from the pharmacy is your best bet.
I don't think so.
Why use one marked in "units" when you want tenths?
It's not hard to find 1 ML syringes already marked in 10ths without having to do any conversions.
When you get one, use it only to draw up your dose, and then inject it...
If giving my 100 lb dog 1 cc is 3/4 more than he actually needs for Heart worms......... then wouldn't it be correct to say that my 100 lb dog needs .25 cc
If ALL you want to treat is Heartworms, 1/10th ML TOTAL is plenty
The 1/10th ML per 10 Lbs, is the proper dosage for treating other worms...
The one-tenth cc is for HW prevention, not mites
For hartworm I think I have been told it is effectave at 1/10th of that dose but dont have proof of that
.
That's what I said:
The amount of Ivomec in a Heartguard pill is only 250 MICROgrams
.

1/10th ML of 1% injectible Ivomec has 1 MILIgram, or 4 times as much
