Marry Christmas and yep, crazy weather here, too.All December we had temps around 15°C/60°F now the weather will shift and a cold front is on it's way with lots of cold rain/snow and frost. 2015 was a bad year for my birds/my garden/ and me. I hope for a better 2016.

The Longtail was a young Yokohama-Mix, I don't know his father but he is too small for a LF and too big for a bantam, so otherwise this love affair would not had ended happy, Most of the hens run screeming form him and I have no clue how he managed that one time to hopp on the hen. But who knows...

I had some wild mix chicks this year. D'Anvers rooster, blue, x bigger Fizzle hen became fizzled hens with the shape of the mother and may end up in size between both parents. Bigger Longtail rooster x d'Anvers hen ended up as a little rooster the size of the mother, with a long tail and long...

Hi and congratulations to your rooster. I am a big fan of an Atkins Diet for young roosters and add dog food, curd,..and hight protein/mineral scratch mix for game birds with milo, buckwheat, amaranth.... but maybe I just pretend that they grow and feather out better. As you can see in the...

I am jealous now! I want a coop like this! Your birds are a lucky bunch. I saw KIndergardens that where not half as nice colored and furnished as your coop.

I am not into show but from what I know from show breeders in my lokal club I would stay with one color or with a color that can fall form one.Like quail and blue quail. Most show breeders here raise 100+ chicks every year for a handful of good birds. I would begin with 3 groups of 1,3...

Oh, sorry to here that..a little higher humidity is a good idea. I would check the weight of the eggs, too. Everything under 30g is much to small the club here recommends min. 32g for the eggs... and my younger hens often have to thick eggshells..... and check the temp of the incubator bad legs...

I have a one-chick-family policy since my space is limited. Somehow my black two Fizzles hatched three earlier this year, a little white and a little blue/buff columbia roo and a perl-gray girl. My grey splash hen, hatched a little grey (maybe splash) chick and now the newest chicks: 8 days...

Next year, maybe, I will see, if Piep has Schnute's x-beak. As I lamented here, all the boys have to leave for camp freezer. And Schnute only stayed with me b/c he was the calmest of his year. I didn't intent to breed with him, but my hens had other thoughts. His half brother Kopernikus is...

I'm not breeding that much and b/c of egg stealing I often don't know who was the real mum, but my first in rank rooster Schnute, has real big wattles for a d'anvers (and a x-beak), coming from a hen with no and a rooster with small wattles, his two sons (with dif. hens without wattles) how ever...

Hmm... don't know if Pyncheons ever crossed the path of the d'Anvers, but de Watermael and the d'Anvers are close related. Look if you spot two spiked combs in your flock. Two spiked combs and some other comb flaws are an indicator that a de Watermael or a d'Uccle was mixed in some where down...

It's a de Watermael. Like the boots of the d'uccle, the crest of the de watermael sometimes shows in with two "normal" d'anvers if both have one of the other breed in their lineage. This or the "milk man" maybe the reason why one of your chicks has a crest.

Eggs... hm... most of my d'anvers are young (between 1 and 3 years old) and from 15 hens I have 5 to 8 eggs a day. They make a big break in winter and when it get's too hot in summer, they often stop for a day or two.... summer here is normally quite cool and it's okay when they spend the...

Hmm... in Europe the rings for show are standardised and d'anvers hens have size 9, roosters size 11. If you just want to mark the birds, coloured spiral or open clip rings 9 to 11 mm will do.

Look, he is such a good looking boy and I only have to make chicken soup out of him, b/c I can't find someone who want's a tiny rooster that turns into a hulk every time a hen sits or the cat next door wanders into his yard. So, just a little calmer and he maybe would have the chance of a long...

The big question is: How to get a calmer d'anvers rooster? I always try to select the calmest rooster but the moment a hen is broody even the sweetest boy becomes the incredible hulk without turning green. Crossbreeding with a calmer breed? But what breed could that be? Most bantams are much...

Here I don't have the problem that people just buy chickens without thinking about the responsibility that come with a flock. I have problems to finde someone. If you have chickens here, you are by law a chicken farmer and have to register with a club or do all the paperwork on your own. So...

And yes crowing is a territorial thing, like most with most bird, they do a accustic marking. And Brügge is Brugges and Lüttich is Liege and they look like this:
