Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

You are absolutely right, Annjee. Heating Pads can leave a nasty burn if they are left on too long. It generally happens when the person is either laying on it or sitting back with the pad between the body and the back of a chair. When my dad got his heating pad burn on his lower back, he'd...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Remember that they don't just sit under a broody, either. In fact, healthy chicks should spend more time running around, scratching and exploring than they do sitting under Mama Hen. I think we get so used to them having their entire brooder heated to the "perfect" temperatures - hot under the...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I really like using Mama Heating Pad - it's so effective and safe. The chicks stand on it, snuggle deep into it, and even if they come into direct contact there is no risk. I've never heard of chicks being burned with the heat plate, though. Maybe you have a unit that is overheating?

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

This place is fantastic, isn't it? Funny about the differences in the chicks....Scout was hatched and initially brooded under a hen and there darn sure wasn't any light under her. When he got hurt we brought him in, used Mama Heating Pad and he preferred the warm, quiet darkness because it was...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Um, no. My brain seemed to have left that little possibility out!

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

That's it, aart! Thanks for posting that link! The cover does come off for washing. I cover a towel with Glad Press 'n Seal and then put that over the heating pad. Wipes off with a wet paper towel.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I just ordered the Sunbeam x-tra large heating pad from Amazon. Make sure you order the one that lets you turn off the automatic shut off feature, otherwise it will go off every two hours or so. Our newest batch of chicks love it. They love being on top of it and when it gets dark they...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Came home today with 12 day old chicks - Buff Brahmas, Light Brahmas, Red Sex Links, and Easter Eggers! Popped them in the brooder with their chicken waterer (they caught on to the vertical nipples immediately) and showed them how to get under Mama Heating Pad. Within an hour they were running...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

They'll be inside for the first day so I can watch for problem children, then they'll go out to the coop with Mama Heating Pad and their own spacious "cave." I also learned not to order them for so early in the year...should be here in early April rather than like the first batch coming in...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I ordered a couple of EEs, a couple more Red Sex Links, Chantaclers, and Buff Brahmas, Miss Bee. I just love having a variety in the flock! I'm more excited to get these than I was our first chicks last year, thanks in large part to you! Now that I know I'm not going to overwhelm myself with...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Ordered my xtra large heating pad today, so I'm about ready for my chicks.......they aren't being shipped until March 30 so I have plenty of time to get Mama Heating Pad rigged in the coop!

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Enola is right. Some breeds do better in cold than others. Small combs and wattles, dense feathers, and good body size seem to be the keys to having chickens which deal with the cold well. I have 4 Easter Eggers, 3 Red Sex Links, a Buff Orpington and two Cuckoo Marans. I'm up in Northern...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

You know, aart, I didn't think of using the light for the first day or so just to observe them and make sure there are no problems with any of them. I'm going to add that to my "brooding out in the coop" plan! Scout is the first chick I've used Mama Heating Pad for, so he was already almost 2...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I would recommend it from day one for young chicks. Scout is almost 4 weeks old now, and he still uses it outside, but only because of his frostbite. He's feathered enough to go without it but he's still recovering and it's really cold outside. There is absolutely no noise - it's just regular...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

The one that was recommended to me I found at Walmart. It has a switch that is specifically for turning off the Auto off feature right on the controls and it's clearly marked on the box that you can do so. Mine has been on for almost a month with absolutely no overheating or other issues. Hope...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I'm using a Sunbeam heating pad that has an "Auto-off" switch and it's working fantastically! Had a chick hatch under a broody but he got his feet wet and they got seriously frostbitten. Scout was living in the house until yesterday, and his "Mama" was that heating pad, wrapped with towels...
