Before I had the Bielefelder's, I had a White Breese hen that was broody for close to a month and a half. That's not good for a hen to do that as they can get weak and skinny and waste away. If you don't want to hatch, it is best to break them as soon as they show signs of going broody. A hen...
Yes, these hen's can go broody, and @Sally PB is right about using that solution if you don't want her to sit and hatch. The cooler air has to be able to keep her underside cooled down, and that is the reason why the cage needs to be up off of the ground as shown in the article at the link that...
Yes, I know that it can sometimes be hard to get animals to take medication. I had to buy one of those pill crushers to crush up the one that I have to give to my dog twice a day, and then I have to mix it in a small bowl of food to get it into him. He's not supposed to have it on an empty...
I went to your other post that you mentioned. I'm sorry that happened to you and poor Pip. I haven't had that happen to any of mine. I wonder if it's some sort of heritary thing in the breeding practices of where they came from? Not everyone breeds the same way.
They will gradually get bigger, so don't worry.
I have all the egg's this week that I put on the counter, and now I will wash up some that were layed earlier this week. I'll have room for them in my fridge, since my neighbor came over and got 3 dozen egg's from me a bit ago for their superbowl...
I don't like doing the hatchalongs because those thread's get to busy for me to keep up. I'm not living on the computer all day anymore. :gig I have also found another breeder of the one's that were imported by GfF in 2011 here in AZ that I have been in contact with and am planning for hatching...
@Sally PB I'm planning on doing a hatch next month that would be due towards the end of the month. I sold 2 dozen egg's this morning to a neighbor, and still have 5 dozen more in the fridge, plus today's is on the counter top. So, I think I'm getting far enough ahead. Hatching late February...
The first one's are always small. She's getting her system going now and her shoot that the egg travels down will stretch more to be able to accommodate a larger egg. It takes time.
It's good that he's trying to help you get rid of the rat's.
@Sally PB No, I haven't started doing a hatch of mine this year yet. I'm waiting on hatching so that the pullet's won't be molting the first year. I do have that incubator that can hold 55 egg's though.
