There are a couple silkie breeders here in California where you might be able to pick them up locally. Sheri Minkner is in Lincoln (above Sacramento). I've gotten hatching eggs and chicks from her but I'm not sure if she ships them. She has all ages and several Blue/Black/Splash breeding...

It is too young to determine gender yet. I've had some obvious boys by 3 weeks and others that had me still guessing at 8 months! Silkie cockerels (roosters) will start getting streamers in their crest and back of their neck around 4 months. You can sometimes see bumps (and/or red spots)...

LOL! You are too smart to put a gender guarantee on a silkie. I've heard it costs about $3,000 to get trained in sexing day old chicks. That might actually be worth my time and money to learn that trade if it would work on silkies. Is it more difficult to sex bantams than LF chicks?

LOL, Thank you for answering. This must have been a really old post. That silkie turned out to be a rooster (they always are for me). It is either Leo Pierre ithe splash roo in my avatar or one of the many that I sold. (Over a dozen this year alone.)

BB layed her first egg at 25 weeks old. We were shocked because she had "crowed" a few times the week before!Maybe her hormones were raging and since nobody else was crowing, she thought she'd better take the lead. BB even did the egg squate a few times, but we thought "he" had just been...

Thank you. Cleo was named because of her/his black splashes around the eyes...like eyeliner. And also reminds me of the colors from my white, silver-chinchilla persian cat I had as a kid. That's interesting that you like the look of Cleo. The breeder who I got the eggs from said Cleo/Cleon...

Here are some updates on my other Blue/Splash chicks. By the way, does anyone realize how crazy silkies get over watermelon? All but one of my Silkies goes crazy for it...like kids on Red Dye 40! Only Misty-Blue prefers figs! I almost hate to give them juicy fruits because their crests get...

Someone asked if I had any updated photos of my splashes....2 months ago! Here is Spotty Dotty, whom has the best contrast in feathering but genetically inherited a single comb from a cochin ancestor a few generations back. I would keep Spotty if he was a pullet as the single comb is recessive...

Does anyone know the proper "color" of this 3 month old silkie? It is Mohawk who I posted a picture of a few posts back. Is he/she a blue, splash or a blue-splash? He/she is light grey with darker splashes.

Mine are finishing up their "grow-out" stage right now too. They are 6 weeks old. They're a mixture of pin feathers and fluff! I've got a few that have earned the name "Mohawk", "Fluffy" and "Puffy". Then, one of my splash chicks has such good contrast b/n the white and dk grey 'splashes'...

MR Robbins is a breeder in GA. I know she has Blue/Black/Splash pens because I've ordered hatching eggs from her before. I'm not sure if she ships chicks, though. You might check the auction section for the age chicks you are looking to buy and then search for splash silkies. Another...

I was hoping to get a bunch of splash and light blues on my last hatch. I got 4 splash chicks and a very light blue! I'm so excited to see them develop! Here's some pics of the babies at 3 weeks old....just starting to get their splash coloring in. They started out white. The light blue...

I'm glad I found this thread. Three weeks ago I incubated my first batch of shipped eggs from BBS silkies. It looks like only blue silkies hatched out. They are just precious and totally spoiled. (I even ordered chicken diapers for them which should arrive in the mail anyday.) They are 2...
