A couple of questions since I've learned the past day or so that there are other folks who got blue/green/olive egg-laying Rhodebar chicks from Greenfire. So who has purebred Rhodebars? I'd like to get some hatching eggs or chicks - but I don't want to raise anymore chicks for six months only...
I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do with my unusual Rhodebar flock. Part of the decision depends on how well these chicks sell. If I had it to do again, I'd probably keep one of the ones I think is male and a couple of the ones I think are female from these new chicks - but I've already...
I'm selling them on Rare Breed Auctions since I don't have room for more chicks right now. I will band them, though, and ask the person who gets them to let me know if the ones with the white heads do indeed ending up being boys.
As they dry more and time passes, I see more differences. Four of them have white on their heads - more of a diffused white area than a spot on three of them. Then the other seven don't have white on their heads. Look at these two photos I just now took:
Would that be auto-sexing -...
Here are some photos of the 11 olive egg "Rhodebars" that hatched yesterday/today. There is one with a distinct white spot on the head. And there are four that are lighter than the others and 7 with darker down and more prominent chipmunk stripes. What do you think?
The last two of my olive colored Rhodebar eggs hatched over night. So I had 100% hatch - for the first time ever! I will take photos later when they're all dried and fluffed up. There are some that are definitely lighter than the others - and the others have clearer chipmunk stripes. So I'm...
Oh yes - I told them that my Rhodebars were laying olive/green eggs instead of brown. I told them that obviously there was a blue egg layer somewhere in the hens' genetics- and that shouldn't be. I asked for them to refund my money - they refused and insisted they were purebred.
That's true. I've communicated with Greenfire several times - and they "assure" me the chicks I got from them are purebred. Yet - one lays an olive egg, the other lays a green egg. I sold one of the female chicks I got - and that one lays a green egg, too.
Some of the olive-colored eggs that my Rhodebar hen (directly from Greenfire) laid are in the process of hatching. Out of 11 eggs, 3 have hatched, and 7 have pips. Tomorrow is day 21. I've studied the 3 that have hatched, and I'm just not sure about whether they're boys or girls. I don't...
My second Rhodebar started laying . . . another green egg. These are my only two Rhodebars - both bought as chicks directly from Greenfire - and they both lay green/olive eggs. Can't wait for the eggs in the bator to hatch.
Beautiful! Today I put the 12 olive-colored eggs I've collected so far from my Rhodebar in the incubator. Greenfire swears they are purebred. So I'm going to see if they're autosexing at hatch. Maybe an olive-egg laying Rhodebar won't be a bad thing. We'll see.
According to GFF, the hen I have is pure Rhodebar - no Legbar mixed in. I got it directly from GFF as a chick. It certainly looks like a Rhodebar. However, there are those green eggs! I'm going to do a test hatch and see what I get.
Just curious about what the rest of you think. You recall that one of my Rhodebars (that I got directly from GFF - and they swear it is purebred) is laying a green/olive egg. It has laid about 8 eggs now - and they're all green. Would it be worthwhile to incubate some of those eggs to see if...
In the email from GFF, they said I was "premature" for being concerned about the color of the eggs since "a hen's first eggs are typically the darkest." They wrote that they can't offer a refund - but they "might" entertain talking to me about it further if it persists beyond a few weeks. They...
Since I have no confidence that any of my "Rhodebars" are purebred (because of the olive green egg), I couldn't in good conscience sell hatching eggs or chicks - even if the other two hens lay brown eggs. So I'm going to try to re-home my rooster, and I'll put the hens with my laying flock. I...
I have 3 females and 1 male. I'm not sure which female laid the egg. The three females look basically the same although one has more barring than the others. The first picture was taken a couple months ago. The others were taken this week.
Just got my first Rhodebar egg - and it's a deep olive green. Beautiful egg - but definitely not what I expected from a Rhodebar. I got my chicks directly from GreefireFarm and they've been in a pen by themselves for over a month. However, I thought their eggs would be brown. Is an olive...
My Rhodebars (bought from GFF) are 25 weeks old - and still no eggs - no interest in the nest boxes, either. Is that typical? I thought since they had some RIR in them, they'd lay by now.
