I had 45 eggs make it to lockdown. 26 healthy chicks are in the brooder now, 2 assists are still in the incubator deciding whether to make it or not, and three others who took too long a break during pipping apparently had the membranes dry out too much ( I wrapped each of the three in a moist...

I am up to 21 chicks hatched, with at least a dozen more pipping! I am so excited to see them coming out! Interestingly the barnyard experiment so far has the advantage to the traditional laying on their sides eggs. 7 of those have hatched so far to only 5 of the upright eggs. I am curious to...

OK, last post of the night. My second place hatcher, a Speckled Sussex. The barred rock won't hold still for a picture. I have five out now. Two barnyard mix, two Speckled Sussex and one Barred Rock. Bed time now. I will check them on my lunch break tomorrow.

And the WINNER FROM BEHIND Heritage Plymouth Barred Rock! Had barely started pipping at my last post and he is climbing out of his shell right now. Sorry for the pic quality, between the little flashlight I was using and the camera phone it won't make National Geographic.

16 pips. Currently there is a race between a barnyard mix on its side which is about 1/2 zipped and a Speckled Sussex upright which is about 2/3 there. Hopefully they will finish soon so I can determine the winner.

Lockdown day! 45 eggs in total in two incubators. One has 24 barnyard mix eggs and I am conducting a personal experiment with them. I have 12 of them upright in a cut down egg carton and 12 on their sides in a more traditional manner. I have always kept them upright in the past but am curious if...

I did a candling last night and had to discard two eggs, one had a tiny chip in it I must have missed when setting them, the other had a blood ring. First was from a blue black splash English Orpington, second was Barnyard mix. Still have 55 eggs rocking. Most have visible development but a...

I added a tiny CPU fan to my still air incubator (my other is a circulated air model.). I was amazed at how quickly just that tiny fan stabilized the temps, which had been varying by up to two degrees at different spots. Best part is I got it and the power supply free from a friend's computer...

I have joined in as of Valentine's Day. I have 58 eggs in the incubator. 24 are purebred from a breeder, kind of a mix: 7 Speckled Sussex, 5 Heritage Barred Plymouth Rock, and a dozen English Orpington (2 Buff, 3 white, and 7 black/blue splash). The rest are barnyard mix from my flock and two...
