Barred Rocks Good Shepard Poulty Ranch

Mine were about 8-9 months old before they started laying. That could be because of a late hatch in the end of May. They are 11 months now, and laying about 4 eggs a week. Of my four breeds they lay the most attractive eggs. Good shape, color and nice sized. Also have good interior quality, very...

Barred Rocks Good Shepard Poulty Ranch

Mine started by laying on the floor. I had them in with a couple Black Copper Marans which had been laying in the nests for a couple months earlier, but that didn't seem to do it. My nest boxes are about 18 to 24 inches off the ground, slightly lower than the roosts they were using. After about...

I replaced the double wafer thermostat system on my 1202 and have started my first hatch since. I can't believe how much more stable the temperature is staying with the electronic thermostat. I have the incubator in a garage that drops down to about the high 40's at night. I cover the cabinate...

I'm not sure why there wasn't a bigger showing of BR, there were numberous White Rock exhibitors. (It was the Plymouth Rock Fanciers Club of America National). There were a few very nice New Hampshires. No Dorkings and yes, plenty of RIR. It was an enjoyable show and it expanded into another...

There were only 4 LF BR at the show and they disappeared before I came back to snap a photo. Below is a Bantam Cock (Durgin) and Pullet (not sure, apologies). I switched cars at the last minute and left my camera behind. Had to settle for a phone. You can click on the picture to enlarge it.

I'm an hour and a half out of Stockton. Will be leaving in about two hours with camera in hand. Since this year it is the ABA National, I think it will be a packed house. Looking forward to pushing my way through the sales building. I wish they would find a larger room.

I just found my first egg from the pullets hatched 5/28/12. That's 34 weeks and 4 days but who's counting. Weighed 53g or 1 7/8 oz.. I think that qualifies as a USDA medium. Not bad for the first egg. The late spring hatch no doubt delayed things.

I raised this guy in a pen with 9 other cockerels and 6 pullets, all from the same hatch. I never separated them. Part of the reason I kept him instead of his brothers was that he was faster maturing, quicker growth and faster feathering. In "The Mating and Breeding of Poultry" (Lamon and...

My GSBR are calmer birds that I can walk amongst, but do not want to be picked up. They will eat scratch from my hand. The lone cockerel is crowing and mating since about 6-7 months, and at almost 8 months has not been aggressive. (Overall he's the quietest guy I've ever kept.) I've made no...

My GSBR pullets have a few black feathers. I think it may go hand in hand with birds of better color and barring. Don't recall having seen it with my hatchery BR, but they had broad barring and the black bars were lighter. I also like the darker boy.
