Appreciate the info! It's definitely a breed worth trying again.

I also have concerns about the genetic diversity (or lack thereof) of American Bresse. I originally purchased Bresse hatching eggs from GFF lines and had a mediocre hatch. Ok, I'll give the benefit of the doubt because they were shipped. When I grew the chicks out (and there were a couple of...

    Bresse Chickens

I don't have any chicks for sale yet, but I've seen them listed for $15+ each in my area.

Cute! Mine were calm and friendly as chicks, too (unlike my other dual-purpose breeds)...and still are.

Thanks! Yes, my profile pic is the cockerel. He's big, but sedate, boy. He has a funny crow (his brothers did, too): at the end of the crow, he makes this sound that reminds me of bagpipes deflating. I believe mine are of GFF lineage. There don't seem to be many people familiar with the breed...

    Bresse Chickens

I have a group of 4 pullets and a cockerel, about 7 months old now. I'm impressed at how nice the pullets' eggs are: all nicely shaped, no meat spots or other internal aberrations, dark yolks, and strong shells. The only "negative" I've noticed so far is that they have to be herded into their...

YVW. It dressed out at 4 pounds, 11.2 oz.

Here are a few photos... Still in the bag: Brushed with olive oil and salt & pepper: Finished product (I obviously didn't tie the legs together): My review of my first AB: it was a very tasty, meaty bird, not a lot of fat. Good size in the legs and breast (haven't tried the...

    Bresse Chickens

Hi - and ! I didn't take photos pre-shrinkbagging, but it's resting in the fridge and I'll take some photos when I get it ready for roasting this evening. Oh, the anticipation..!

One of my AB pullets just started laying a couple of weeks ago, a cute little brown egg...glad to hear they're also good layers. I can hardly wait to try it - with that kind of feed conversion, I can see raising a lot more this spring and summer. They're pretty mellow birds, too. Will update soon!

    Bresse Chickens

Finally processed an American Bresse cockerel today, along with a couple of other mixed-breed cockerels. I could tell very early on that the Bresse was much meatier than the dual-purpose mixes (one was Black Australorp/New Hampshire Red, the other was Gold Laced Wyandotte/NHR), but the...

    Bresse Chickens

It's one of those things you don't think about until it happens - my white ducks can bathe and magically be clean again, but the chickens are just stuck with the mud on them until they can dust bathe it off (and that might actually just add to the problem). Just hoping for some non-rainy days...

    Bresse Chickens

The mud here is bad, too. The ground looks like it did last spring: sloppy, sodden, and generally horrible. Happy ducks, chickens don't seem to mind, but it's nearly taken my boot off my foot and I've done some fairly acrobatic moves trying not to fall face-first in it. Since my Bresse are...

    Bresse Chickens

I'm late to the party...we had snow last week and the Bresse reacted pretty much like the rest of the flock - uncertain at first, not really wanting to walk in it, but then eventually getting over it. We got down to the teens (and below zero with wind chill) and they were just fine.

    Bresse Chickens

@speedy2020, I typically dry pluck ducks, except for the ones I raise - with Muscovies, plucking is nigh impossible, so I skin them. I hate to give up (crispy) skin and, even more, the precious fat, but skinning can go pretty quickly. I understand you can scald to loosen feathers or use "duck...

    Bresse Chickens

That looks - and sounds - fantastic!! Yikes - you got 5 roos out of 6 eggs? I had similar luck with some duck eggs I set this summer: 4 drakes and 1 duck. At least roosters (and drakes) are good eating. I wasn't able to find Bresse locally, either, so I hatched 16 shipped eggs - only 8 made...

A couple of photos of my 4 month olds - the cockerels are very meaty!

    Bresse Chickens

Thanks for the heads-up...mine are 4 months old so not laying yet, but I'm hoping they prove to be good (ideally, year-round) layers. Cute chicks!

    Bresse Chickens

Thanks for sharing your review. Mine are almost 8 weeks old now and considerably plumper than the BCMs and New Hampshire Red mixes that are the same age. I haven't tried Dorkings or Sussexes, but the NH mixes have been delicious, so the bar's going to be pretty high for the Bresse. I haven't...

Thanks for the confirmation! Always a bonus to have truly dual purpose birds.
