    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Oliver! He's going to be a big dude, esp since he's only 14 weeks old right now and seriously into mating with the older gals, against their will I might add! A few more of the ladies and their man: The coop and run (run to the doubled by the end of the year):

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Wow, I've been gone a long time! :frowWe've gotten 5 eggs from our Speckled Sussex (Dot) so far, starting at almost 18 weeks old! We finally were able to build a run attached to the coop, even though it's just 10 ft long for now, eventually 20ft. And one of our olive eggers is a ROOSTER! :eek...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

That's the plan! I have to kind of estimate when they'll be ready because I have to book the processor two weeks in advance. They are HUGE already though. About 3lb. These are the only my photos I have that sort of show the size difference from the past few days.

They are meaties! They are also 5.5 weeks old!! The size difference is astounding! They're about 3x the size of my biggest 5.5 WK old layer, my Easter Egger!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

I had to assemble a FAST pen for the 5 week old layers today. I found Amelia limping (Silver Gray Dorking) and though it doesn't appear anything is broken and nothing is bleeding, I didn't want to risk her staying with the huge broiler chickens another night. So all 7 of that group of layers are...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

We're making some progress on the coop, but we have a ways to go yet. The 5 week olds out in their playpen: And the 1 week olds in the homeschool room brooder:

Here is a picture of my cream legbar when I first got her so you can compare Hope this helps! Thanks so much! So there is a good chance that the one without a full solid chipmunk stripe on her head is actually the cream legbar, not what I was guessing, lol!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

That really did help, thanks! Now I see that they also have brown Olive Eggers, so that explains how there are two brown chicks. But my possible cream legbar doesn't match their picture perfectly so I'll need to search some more to see which is which! I think our meal maker is a White Leghorn...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Our last babies are here! The darkest one is definitely an olive egger, and one if the chipmunk ones is a cream legbar, but which of the other two is another olive egger and which is the freebie meal maker?! Lol!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Oh my word, my 4wk old Easter egger just flew to the top of their 3ft tall brooder and perched on the 2x4 their babycake treat (that they ignore) is strung from! I quickly shooed her back in (the garage was wide open!) And placed some strips of extra hardware cloth over the top to discourage...

I do find it hilarious that chicks shipped to us both yesterday from Meyer, you're across the country and I'm about 5 hours away.... and your chicks arrived a day before mine are expected to! Lolol!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

So many cute chicks, congrats @IdyllwildAcres and @wafarm! I just put together the MHP for the 4 chickies arriving tomorrow and I'll wash out the waterer and an upside down lid or kid plate as a feeder for starters, as my current chick feeder will be a bit too long for the box. Wow, I'd...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Well, our "babies" are doing well and officially at the 4 week "teenager" mark! Nights and inclement weather is spent in the big box garage brooder. Daytime is fun time out in the playpen! The coop is slowly coming along... (Yes, I realize I did the silplate incorrectly but I'm not...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

We're in KY and the only way around the rule is hatcheries, craigslist etc, and buying them older than 8 weeks from one store somewhere in town that intentially raises them to sell after 8 weeks so that people can purchase as many or few as they want. I'm hoping to order 3 more from Meyer as...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Hahaha, if we could just buy 2 or 3 at a time locally I'd be in hot water with the hubby! With our local minimum being 6 for a farm store purchase it helps keep me in check a bit! Enjoy the new babies and do be sure to show off some pictures!

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Hubby helped me this weekend and between what I managed to do alone and what he helped with, this is how far we have come! The little pen on the left is their outdoor explore pen while we wait on the coop and run being done. It can fit in our biggest garden bed but not the rest, whoops! They...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

Today we are building a playpen for the chicks to be out in the sun in the garden and in the areas of the yard where their run will eventually be. Hubby ran off for a few more 2x2s, a couple hinges, and a handle so I'm taking 5 min to rest. Sadly the little "runt", for want of a better word...
