Haha! Your probably imagining big ripe figs something like Cleopatra ate in her palace gardens. These are tiny wild ones, mostly seed, but yum to a chook... :D Still does summon a great mental picture.
I finally went to see what all the fuss was for the guineas out in the paddock. The fig tree is full of fruit! As a result the chickens are now dining on large sprays of little wild figs. I have hung the branches in their coops. Lots of fun for a chook party they reckon! :weee :cd :cd :cd
They have sharp eyes. Just squeeze the tomatoes in front of them. They are very attracted to the sight of seeds. Very exciting for a chicken apparently ;)
I cover with wire so the can only pick at it. They can't dig up the ground. I collect seeds from anything I see them eating too. Weeds are very nutritious. Today I planted nasturtiums in their car tyre planters, as they are a great tonic and they also love to eat the flowers. I have planted...
I have also made a brick surround garden to grow grass and weeds they like plus old car tyres full of dirt. Found out they love passion fruit vine leaves. So they will get one growing over each coop.
I have been sprouting barley and oats plus some budgerigar mix in square cement building blocks. I put some aviary wire over the top so the chickens can pull it out only as it grows through. Big success on that one. Chooks love it!:)
I have been growing herbs and edible weeds for them. Plus sprouting grains. Look at this site. Love all the ideas http://www.herbcottage.com.au/blog/2010/10/herbs-for-healthy-chickens/
