Actually what is on the website is not the first class. They have a class coming up down at A&M that was full almost as soon as they posted it. And that was way before the letters went out. Some of the folks in breeder groups discovered it a month or two ago and started spreading the word...

We're down here near Terrell and we have at least one mated pair of Cara Caras near us. We were surprised when we first saw them, since it was unusual to have them so far north. Have to watch out for them since they will attack living animals too. They've been here at least 5 years now but...

Best thing I did for some of my pens was to start using a Peck-O-Matic feeder. Less spill mess and keeps the food nice and dry inside a 5 gallon bucket. They're not cheap but they pay for themselves if you wind up losing a good bit of feed due to either the birds scooping it out or to rain.

Turkeys are a lot more rough and tumble than chicks are. And they have a pecking order just like chickens have. It's a difference experience to get used to how turkey do compared to chickens - both as youngsters and adults. You should see my pen of bachelor toms - they look beat up all the...

Immunity or *resistance* is when the body is able to fight off a germ. Vaccines do this by artificially exposing a person or animal to a germ, generally a germ that has been weakened so it hopefully won't cause the actual disease. Natural immunity comes from being exposed to a germ in the...

No we do not vaccinate for Marek's. Have had one cockerel die from it, did necropsy and sent tumors to pathology lab for verification. None have had it since, that was 5 years ago. Would not vaccinate for it even if more came down with it. No, we don't vaccinate our chickens for anything...

No, I'm not involved with the Houston show - too far for me to go. They just happened to recently announce in a group that they were setting things up for the shows there. The Harris County Fair show is Oct 21 and the Klein show is Dec 2.

Most of the time you won't find the show information just posted online, especially if it is happening at a fair or rodeo type event, because the folks that are in charge of the poultry show are usually different than the people putting on the other activities. Especially when the poultry show...

Poultry Show Central website keeps a list of shows. Just email the contact person listed for the show you're interested in and they will send you the information packet.

A lot of times when a show goes on at a fair/rodeo, you have to contact a different person for info on the fancier's show portion because the fair usually only handles the 4H/FFA broiler type show. I know for a fact that there is a fancier's show going on in Houston because I'm part of an...

The bee feeder might attract more bees overall, but if you put it away from the coops, then it will do more to draw the bees away from the poultry. If they haven't shown aggressive behavior, then inviting more bees with a feeder shouldn't be much of a problem if the feeders is far enough away...

Yes. The problem is that it is too warm for winter but there is not much in the way of a nectar flow for them to eat from. They are attracted to the sweeteners in the feed. Normally in winter they stay clustered inside their hive to stay warm but it's too hot for them to do that with the warm...

Up here we have those wild temp swings usually at least once every couple of weeks, sometimes once a week or even twice a week. It's more of a pain for me than it is for the birds. But when we get those wild swings where the temp drops 30 to 50 degrees suddenly, that is when I for sure give...

We do not keep ours in because of cold temperatures. They are much happier being free to roam around. Chickens have a body temp of around 103*F - the cold isn't really a problem for them if they have been properly acclimated. Birds that are kept with heat lamps and/or brought in and out of...

Yes, it's called fencing. There are problems with people who let their animals run loose all the time. But that is not the dog's fault, that is the fault of a poor owner of the owner. Dogs have a prey drive and a bird running around looks like great fun to chase and even kill. It's their...
