I love that post by yellow house farm, thanks YHF!
I would think that if you have enough space, the cocks could get along in the winter, especially since it's not the mating season???
My Crevies? Well, that is a big problem with these chicks I just got! They look exactly like polish! NOT at all what I want! But my old birds look better to me...
Lets see.... Now this is my girl from Ideal hatchery. I really wanted to compare what is out there, due to extreme curiosity...
Well, since you are looking... I'd like to ask you to at least look at the Crevecoeur, as they lay well, a largish medium white egg, and basically, nobody has great stock, as they're so rare and very few people have taken them on and they desperately need good breeders. On the other hand...
Well, I must say I have been observing mother hen finding bugs for the chicks to eat. She does it all day long, and if they were in my care, .... well, I know I wouldn't be so attentive ;P So there *might* be a difference in vitality at my home :)
I have witnessed my mother hen finding bugs and giving them to her chicks, so there may be something to that! I also think it really helps that in this case, the mother is the alpha hen in the coop :)
I'm going to remember that about growing them out in the spring when bugs are more abundant...
I'm wondering if I'm seeing things, or not. Being new to "breeding" (Not calling myself a breeder, I am just starting out with what I've got on hand) but this batch of chicks I have growing up seem so much more vigorous, healthy and larger than their parents (it seems). The only difference is...
I don't quite understand the question? He seems to stand ok, his wings look like they're held a bit high though, and he does need some conditioning (a bit battered looking, LOL) But with TLC, he'd look ok, I think? But I'm not that experienced...so take that with a grain...
Well, I just learned about another chicken I never heard of! That's a pretty cool chicken! I love the side lobes, that's cool looking, and the long legs! Do they hatch brown then turn white? That's very unusual too!
LOL, I'm sure there are many not on that list, therefore the etc... At least you have many people raising Marans, my poor creves have no company practically
I feed my birds fermented feed also. I add a bit of yeast in there as well. Never thought of powdered colostrum. Does that have active cultures in it? Is it for feeding calves?
BTW, they DID have diarrhea! Hope it's better today
Good advice! Thank you! Wish I checked in last night already. but hopefully they'll be ok!
I feed them yogurt as often as I can, so they are used to it (and love it) But just in case, I'll limit the amount to a tablespoon each :) Thanks again!
OH dear, I've been really bad. I discovered my boys (a crevecoeur cockerel and sultan cockerel) love my pound cake! Today they ate a whole bunch of it, with the kids having a jolly ol time feeding them. Are they going to get sick? What should I look out for?
Doesn't seem like a bad thing, I mean, I always thought live animals were limited to priority mail minimum anyway? And it seems they're expanding the types of birds that can be shipped.
LOL, my "duh" sense of humor, I'm so full of it
Rockashella, I don't think there is anything wrong posting information like that, in fact, that's what this place is for, sharing of info, especially on regulations. I haven't read that yet, gonna now...
