Hmmmm... Looks like a lot has gone on here since last night. Very interesting insight from all. I guess I will be at odds with the standard since I will continue to breed towards the silver gray shade... I just prefer that color and that is what drew me to lavenders in the first place. I dont...
That hen does look medium shade of blue.... so now I get why the Ameraucana breeders club preferred "self blue" over "lavender". Seems like they were looking for a Blue Ameraucana of uniform color, without lacing, that breeds true. I guess that makes sense. Too bad, I really love the lighter...
just took a look at the link listed above.... is it just me or does the picture of the "self blue" hen in the gallery look really dark to you guys? Looks just like a blue hen without the lacing to me. I cull for birds with that coloration. I am doing something wrong? Shouldn't the color be much...
Not sure of anyway other than test breeding... You could test breed split to split and get lavs that way. If the parent stock has discernible differences between the blacks and lavs you may be able to select on an attribute that clearly comes from the lav side but you are certainly taking...
While it might be difficult to get perfect lavs anywhere, you can certainly do better than feathered shanks. I would not try to figure out how it happened and put them in your layer pen. I would not use them for breeding. You can check out the ABC breeders directory for other sources.
Harry, very interesting insight as always. Is the splash male you are using with your lavenders based on silver??? I am growing out some blacks right now with hopes to use them with my lavenders... Now you 've got me thinking.
My first generation lavs (see the pictures of my rooster a few posts up) came from a reputable breeder and the eggs are on the greenish side compared to my blues and blacks and are definitely on the smallish side. Overall i am happy with the trio I kept but they need work just like many others...
On my phone right now so its really hard to see. They look blue from here but i will look again when i get home. I just hatched some splits from one pen and some blue x blacks from another. They all look black... Now im worried. I was planning on using any keepers with my lavs... My next hatch...
I haven't ordered from him but you will do very well with his stock. He is one of the countries most respected breeders and has a great reputation to boot. My only interactions with him are in his role at the ABC and I found that he is very professional and extremely responsive. Good luck with...
Donna, I hear what you are saying but not so sure what to think... blue is dominant over black so if it the bird is truly black it wouldn't be carrying the blue gene(s). Am I wrong here? Is the lacing carried by the blue gene(s) or is carried in the black or both. My guess is that it is...
