I feed them mostly Flock Raiser because I have ducks and geese, too... everyone's on the same feed. However, I DO get them a small portion of both scratch grains, and black oil sunflower seeds, but with a 5-1 ratio... 5 parts Flock Raiser to 1 part of scratch and sunflower seeds, so it's mostly...

I have had supplemental light in the hen house ever since the days started getting shorter, from 5 am until about 9 am, and then again, from 4 pm until 10 pm. Doesn't seem to matter to them... they have their run, where they have access to it 24/7 (about the only time I close it is when I need...

Good to know, Levi... yours stopped laying about a month earlier than mine. Hoping mine will kick in soon!

Ok, anyone's birds laying... I know marvun22 and LeviS said theirs stopped. Mine stopped in January, and haven't had an egg yet. Now, with the typical manic spring weather (roller-coaster, up and down), they still haven't started laying, but I keep checking. Just wondering about everyone else.

If they haven't already, they should be getting the Nutrena feed line for poultry. TSC just started carrying it.

LOL! Come get mine! Check, though, before you show up... just in case.

I wouldn't put a wood-burning stove in the coop... chances of it spewing out cinders into the bedding, and a fire that will burn down the coop, thereby taking your babies with it, are increased, especially if they're not used to the stove. I use a 1500 watt utility heater and that's sufficient...

Yep, you're getting a TSC... it should be open by now... it's right across the street from the new Menards.

I've raised the Freedom Rangers (also called Rainbows). And I've raised the Cornish X. I agree... the Cornish X are too lazy to get up and move around, and just lay around, scarfing food, even on the 12-hr feed/12-hr starve cycle. I started out with a dozen Cornish X, and all but 3 died from...

North Dakota doesn't have an NPIP requirement. The only time it's required is if you are going to show the birds at the county/state fairs. And if you do, you can buy the certificate for $1 when you arrive at the fairgrounds, for each bird. There aren't that many testers here in the state...

I've only delivered to one customer... she lives in Braddock, south of Steele. I happened to be in the area, due to my contractor status, and having an assignment near her, so I arranged to meet her in Steele to deliver. The other two that bought the rest (one bought 31 of my birds) either...

I've been hatching since mid-January... and have hatched probably close to 70 chickens. I've sold ALL of them, except for two that I wanted to keep for myself (purebred White Jersey Giant pullet to replace the one I culled last fall due to pecking, and an Ameraucana pullet, to add to my numbers...

I will have some by then. I have 4 week old pullets, along with a 4 week old cockerel, so they'll be laying fertilized eggs by then. Which do you prefer? Eggs or pullet chicks?

Hey, you want my GLW roo? He's 18 weeks old this week, and I thought he was a she! SURPRISE! Opened the door to the chicken house, and he/she's going at it with a Black Australorp hen, right there at the door! I don't want him, and if I don't re-home him, he's destined for freezer camp this...

Loghousemom, I'm west of Minot, on Hwy 2, in Ross (about an hour west). I know you're outside of Drake, which is southeast of Minot. Great thing about me is that I travel about the state due to my contractor job with an agency that contracts with USDA (SNAP program), so it's no big deal to...

I hear ya, about the "waist-high" snow. Hopefully, we won't have a repeat of the '10 winter. 2011 was mild compared to that one, and except for the late start to spring this year, this past winter was about average. I would be grateful to the Lord if winter would delay her start, due to the...

Loghousemom, I just got 5 buff orp pullets and 1 buff orp cockerel from McMurray, they're 3 weeks old now (day-old chicks) and they're doing great. Funny you should mention the lavenders... I received 14 eggs from PapaBrooder but none of them hatched (too damaged by USPS, I suspect). I have 6...

That chicken math and addiction gets us, every time, LOL! If you're still interested later on in the year, just PM me. I travel all over the state due to my contractor status for the federal government, so I can deliver, too... which will make it easier to improve the hatchability rate.
