Hmm... I will be watching this more closely... It seems I have missed some interesting stuff! i want to know more about the rabbit situation!
UPDATE ON MY MEALIES:
I have at least 150 pupae, probably 20 beetles, and TONS of larva! Hoping to have enough to feed as a treat in the winter...
Ya! It took about 5-8 minutes tops! I was so surprised! I always knew that some morphed in a matter of a couple of hours (because when I checked the bin before, there wasn't any), but I had no idea that it happened THAT fast!
I thought so! I knew that they were all starting to morph (and this is my second generation) so i was picking a few our multiple times a day, so they they wouldn't get eaten, and I saw the head of this one, and when I pulled it out, it still had skin! I was shocked! LOL
Hmm, I wouldn't think that these would be living in your garden... They are grain or "meal" eaters. They don't do well in dirt, although, I have heard of people trying it... Do the worms look the same, or just the beetles?
I don't know about other people's practice, but when my beetles begin dying (after I find 3-4), I feed them to the birds. It is easier than trying pick them out when they are dead!
Umm, a prize? Hmm.... IDK, have you been good?
Thanks guys! So that puts me at about 2100 large mealies, and more little ones on top of that number! So if I start with about 100 hundred, that means that each beetle produced 21 mealies early on, and then more after a bit!
Ok.... Question time!
I am terrible at estimating, so what do you guys think?
Can you estimate how many mealies are in this sift? I had about 7-8 of these, so I was trying to get a ROUGH estimate of how many large mealies I have... I have probably almost as many smaller ones.
Thank you!!!
Urban enthusiast,
That should be a fine set-up! I started raising mealworms last fall, and haven't had to clean out their poo yet! No smell either... AND our house is cold in the winter (it is an old farm house)like 62-67 all winter, and my mealies were fine! Yea, they slowed down a bit, but...
Hey everyone...
Just thought that I would update on my farm. I think that I said earlier that I hundreds and hundreds of baby mealies crawling around my bin. I am LOVING my screened drawer setup! Anyway, here is a couple of pics of the happy parents:
I would have pics of the babies but...
Yes, I have loads of little wormies too! Waiting for them to grow up so I can fell confident about feeding a FEW! Not too many!
QUESTION:
I have found 4 dead beetles so far. Should I start feeding out the beetles so that I don't have a bazillion dead ones to dig out? (OK, you caught me, it is...
Yes, more than likely it was mites, NOT a disease.
You should try WestKnollAmy. I haven't personally used her, but lots of people have, and their mealies are doing GREAT!
I was told that when I got my mealies to not use the substrate that they came in. So you are supposed to use a strainer to sort the mealies and their substrate, but I just dumped them in. Especially where these are your first mealworms, and you AREN'T adding to an existing colony, I wouldn't...
