@tao chick that's too bad only 3 CH hatched, I wonder if incubator had temp spike? Usually, I get a pretty good hatch rate, even in my homemade incubators that aren't perfect temp throughout. But, the batch set 5/20 - was a 100% failure, as temp spikes to 44*C vs it's supposed to be 37.5*C...
Sorry you had such a poor hatch. I have a few extra chicks - they'd be black, as the others I want to grow out.
Was it you or someone else who said awhile ago, you knew someone who would buy extra eggs? I just washed up a bunch that hadn't been refrigerated, the oldest might be 10 days. They're...
That's a cool chick - reminds me of some that I've hatched.
That big "headspot" indicates the barred gene & at least with mine, most of those with such a big headspot end up being roosters.
I really like the chicks that are "chipmunks" and barred gene combined - makes for every interesting...
That's too bad she had such a poor hatch rate! Hope the others make it.
I know that I've had more temp issues incubating since it's warmer. My Genesis 1588 seems to be still doing a nice job, just lowered the temp like to 99.2*, so it doesn't overheat.
Sorry to everyone else who has poor...
I've got chicks a'hatching too! Most are my CH eggs but a few are the CL/EE from @Susieq2015. It looks like out of 7 "bonus" spitz eggs, the broody hatched 5 chicks, 2 are "yellowish".
CL/EE chick:
I didn't share a photo for your sake, honest!
Don't go getting yourself kicked out two the chicken coop! :)
Oh, by the way, they were co-hatched by hens & this is what I found the other day.
:D
Oh, are you talking about morehens disease? :D Incubating eggs can get addictive ... And then hens go broody & I give them eggs too!
Good news! The ducklings have hatched & moved them into the brooder area that now has rabbit cage wire on the floor underneath their bedding.
I'm glad Bob was tasty! They can also be a bit tough b/c they get exercise & don't just gorge themselves with feed like Cornishx. Also, I generally cook the older roosters & hens in the crockpot or use low, moist heat (covered dish in oven).
Congrats! That's great!
So far the spitz broody is still very determined & still on the "dummy" eggs. I'll candle them at some point & see if they are developing or not. She has food & water right by her head & I think she's hardly moved, just a little to eat/drink.
The other spitz hasn't laid...
Had a great time today with you all!
I enjoyed the relaxed setting more than last year when I hardly had a chance to say a quick hi. Thank you chicken girl for all you & your family did to make this possible!
It was sure hot, but better than being rained out.
Oh, one more thing - I won't be bringing any turkey poults - sold out already! They weren't due to hatch until today, but they hatched early.
But, a repeat customer decided they wanted them all!
So, I'll only have hatching turkey & chicken eggs, if anyone is interested.
Plus, the few extra...
Thanks - just wanted to make sure I didn't need to bring that stuff, as we're trying to fit everything into a car.
I don't know exactly when they're due, but eventually I'll have lots of ducklings if all the eggs hatch!
Great! It's a skill worth learning, especially when you end up with...
@Chicken girl 15
1:30 sounds good - I'll plan on that. I'll bring another shirt, too, so there's no splatters! Oh, do you have a tree or "stand" I could screw into for the "station"? It's small, but need a solid surface.
And I'd need a bucket of water to rinse knives & hands. A garbage bag or...
I can bring my stuff - we tried to do a processing demo last year, but never set a time. If you want to do this,
let's agree on a time, so that anyone who's interested can join in watching.
I can show you how to skin, unless you want to heat up water & hand pluck. My homemade plucker isn't portable.
@Chicken girl 15 thanks for the offer the other day to pick up the Sussex hatching eggs, but the lady I know who wanted them ended up going herself & getting chicks from the guy in Afton.
@Gramma Chick
Hope all those chicks aren't packing peanuts the hatcheries send (roosters!) There should be some pullets in there too. :)
The Swedish Flower hens I'm thinking $25 each, since day-olds go for $12 - $15 each (from other breeders in NY).
The Catskill Homesteader pullets - $8 each.
