I wish I had a broody! I'm excited to try out a hatch from my new Rooster. Going to have to wait for a broody hen though.

Our hens lay best on Layena, too. I bought a different brand in June and I was hardly getting any eggs. Switched back to Purina and now I'm getting 6 or 7 per day. Two of my pullets are laying. Waiting for the other five to follow suit. ;)

I painted a small drop of food coloring on my chicks so I would know which ones came from which parents. You could do it with your birds and it will be semi-permanent. When they molt you'll have to reapply the color.

We bought leg bands at the local feed store. We got 4 of them for about a dollar. They color selection wasn't that good, but we only needed a couple of them.

We have some australorps that we can't tell apart. We put leg bands on them and the problem is solved. We bought them at the feed store for 25 cents each.

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure my "yellow bird" is an Amber White and not a tetra tint. She's almost 17 weeks and is a fairly solid pale yellow color. She is getting very big (so definitely not a leghorn) but still has a tiny comb and looks like a pullet. Can't wait to get an egg from...

Where are you? I'd gladly trade you a Rhodebar and an australorp that lay white eggs nearly everyday. I'm just not a fan of white eggs. LOL

Here is a pic of my chick. There are two "white" ones. You can see the one of the right is more of a yellow color than pure white. (The white chick on the left is supposed to be a White Plymouth rock). Does the one on the right look like a Tetra Tint? I've never seen a "yellow" chicken...
