In my area I haven't gotten a single reply for hatching eggs or day old chicks, but I can sell 8 week old pullets all day long for $12-15 each. I see a lot of ads for day-old straight run from $3.50-5.00. I put my cuckoo marans up at $4, and didn't get a single reply, but I can't keep enough 8...
I
I posted an ad on CL for my first batch this year. Haven't had to post another one, and still have people waiting. Thinking it's time for another 'bator...
That's awesome, and I have more respect for you guys that build your own incubators that work than you will ever know. I'm not mechanically inclined, and having Amazxon deliver something to my door is just so tempting, so it's easier for me to buy one ready to go out of the box
At my size, and what I am selling, I really think my next purchase will be another Octagon 20. That's about the right number of chicks to handle and sell, but I'm running out of chicks before the next batch comes along. I haven't had a single reply to my day-old ad, but I can't keep enough...
I got that one, too. I want one so bad, but I just can't justify spending that much right now. The email did say that for a limited time they will include the humidity pump for free on pre-orders...
I intentionally set my eggs with a due date on a Thursday/Friday. That way I am at work when it starts, then I have the weekend to sit and watch the bulk of the action
I will have to try that. I've gotten pretty good at picking out my Polish and cuckoo marans at about 2 weeks old, but this year I added some French BCMs that I bought straight run at 4 weeks old. These little buggers are 8 weeks old now, and I still don't have a clue. Some have more pronounced...
My first 2 hatches in the Octagon 20 hatched between days 22 and 23. I was relying solely on the built in thermometer . I bought a spot check, and was measuring spots from 97.9-99.9. Most of the temps were low, the only highs were near the heater. I bumped this hatch up to 100.0 on the display...
I don't have the pump on my 20 Advance, but I do have to add a paper towel or sponges at lockdown to get to 65%. I can't get above 55% otherwise. Are you filling the channels as well, or relying solely on the pump for humidity? I will be ordering the pump soon, and for what I've seen in my area...
So glad you hatched. I was starting to wonder myself.
For crooked toes, I usually change the shoes after three days. Both instances I have had have been corrected within a week. Same for the splayed legs strap, at least in my experience. I have read that it can take up to two weeks, but I think...
Just to recap my last two hatches for people that may not have seen the posts, I hatched 17 of 19 fertile running 40-42% the first 18 days with the first hatch. Second hatch I dropped to 35-37% and hatched 12 of 20 fertile. I had a drawn out hatch, most between days 22 and 23, so I assumed my...
Put my first batch old enough to sex up for sale last night. Sold half of them already. That's what is called "enabling" a hatchaholic. Starting to think I need another 'bator. Oh well, still have my Feb. HALs coming along
I've said this to purpletie, and I'm warning you, too. I started with 4 chicks 7 years ago. As of yesterday, I have 6 coops and 73 chickens. It's a slippery slope
