Chicken survived a dog attack

It can be depressing on here but it's worse when you're not getting any help. Thank you so much for sharing and assisting. Anise, my hen seems to be recovering well, she's out with the others and I think the blood is from pulled feathers, I still can't find any punctures or scrapes so I sprayed her in the area I though the blood was coming from with an antibacterial spray. She's not limping or lethargic and I expect her not to lay for a few more days. My dog also seems to be on her way to a happy chicken free home, so there's good news there too.

Can't stop a dog from acting like a dog.

One of the main reasons we don't free range is because of our dogs. Our dogs work for a living, just as our flock does. While the chooks give us eggs, the dogs keep the vermin down around the farm. We also have an over abundance of air borne predators around us, hawks, owls and eagles so as much as I would love our birds freedom, they get safety instead. The one time one of our extra roosters tangled with one of the dogs was the one time we let the extra roos out in the back yard to scratch around and one of our young dogs (Border Collie, Walker Coon Hound mix) let his hound genes overpower his Collie genes and the feathers flew.

Like I said, can't stop a dog from acting like a dog. Glad your hen is recovering.

I totally agree, our dog was not happy here too, she wanted the chickens while they were in their run, to the point of damaging it. She was also very anxious and my 4 kids made her very nervous, she would cower when they would play loudly (the kids never hurt her either). Plus I'm not a dog person, she is the only dog I've ever owned and I will never get another one. Dogs are wonderful, for other people, I'm hoping to place her with someone who doesn't have small kids and is much more active than I am. The home that she is visiting also has another dog a little older than her so she will have a playmate.

Really thanks for all your help.

The chick is 5 weeks old (sept.11).

Her toes looks pink and she can press a bit with them.

I gave her electrolytes all day yesterday, will add more to the water now.

I have her on a warm water bottle with a towel between the bottle and her and then covering her. She is pretty fluffed up but eating a lot and drinking and poohing too (all looks normal on that end).

I just gave her some arnica and calendula (homeopathic). I wont be able to get her to a vet until Monday.

Can you explain this a bit more to me? "The bones could be green stick fractured, displaced with the bones overlapping or even compound with the bone through the skin."

If her leg is broke and there is no way to "fix" it how would I know or when would you choose to cull?

I find it horrible to try to heal them and help them recover to realize at the end that I have just kept them alive and in pain with no solution. So I would rather be really clear about it from the begining and not have it drag on for any of us.

Thanks for the support.
Our chick is still with us(sitting on my lap now happily chirping) 4 days later. I am sure he/she will make it.

The chick has managed to keep its leg straight on its own. I am guessing the bone might not even be broke. The dog bit it on the thigh and I think it was bruised.

My vet friend could not find a broken bone but? The foot is warmish and pink. The chick is eating, drinking and hoping (on1foot).

Here are a few photos. I put a diss infecting cream on the wounds2x a day. The peroxide I originally used was a bad choice, it dried the skin terribly.
