Hello, anyone here from Fairfax county, VA? We need your help/advices for how to save our 5 orpingtons. County officials from complaint department visited us and told us we cannot keep them because my lot size is not big enough. My kids are sooooooooooooo sad to let their cute feature friends go. Does anyone know if there a way to keep them? Thanks very much.

Best,
Leon

That's terrible!
However, many counties have changed their laws because citizens sent in petitions and you could certainly try that, particularly if other locals wish to keep chickens as well and will support your efforts.

I really hope you can keep your flock and if not you can find them a wonderful home. Best of luck!

You are not allowed any chickens at all, or you are not allowed five of them? What size lot are you supposed to have to keep chooks, and how big is yours? (if it's only a little under, there might be scope to apply for an exemption, you need to read the regulations to see what they say)

If it was the complaints department, are the girls annoying the neighbours?

Thank you people for your support. I know I am not the only one who want to keep chickens in this county, but so far all the efforts to change the regulation is not successful...

@potato chip , the local regulation says 2 acre minimal for chickens, mine is far smaller than that, only 1/4 acre, but it is more than enough for 5 birds. They are only 12 weeks old and too quiet to bother anyone. I really don't understand why my neighbor decided to report me, I thought they are were nice people...

That's terrible! If you still have the chickens (probably not since it's been several months since your post) and are looking for a new home, I may be able to help. I am leading an effort at my children's independent school to bring chickens to our 20+ acres. We want to start with 5 or so with potential to go up to 10. Let me know if I can help you place the chickens or help in any other way.

I know it's been several years, but Fairfax County allows you to have 4 chickens in the city (no limit on the lot size) - no roosters.
