Have you ever seen an egg laid?

Today we cleaned out the coop in the later afternoon, one of my Cukoo Maran's kept getting under foot. I picked her up and plopped her on the ground. A minute later my husband asked what was wrong with her. She was walking around oddly and her vent was oddly shaped and drippy. Then a second later she laid a shell less egg! I felt so bad! Did I just interrupt her egg laying?!

Don't feel badly. Chances are your hen didn't understand what was going on, either. When an egg is abnormal in some way, sometimes it feels strange to the hen, causing her to diverge from her normal egg laying routine. This is why you will often find shell-less eggs on the poop board under the perch or sitting out in the middle of the run. These strange eggs must feel different somehow to the hen.

And don't worry about it. These strange eggs happen from time to time, and the hen goes right back to laying normal eggs.
