Hands on hatching and help

Oh I envy you so much! Enjoy yourself and your boys!!
Sorry you couldn't take Mavis. Wonder if she would have gotten in the water? Lol

By the way, when you lay eggs down, do you prop them at all to have the air cell end just a tad elevated? I tried watching the broodies and noticed alot of times, the eggs were positioned under them with the pointy end in toward the center of the nest, having the air cell slightly elevated in the bedding. I wonder if that would help have less malpositions on shipped eggs especially

The water is freezing here! My mom kept saying she would swim away if I brought her. :gig I got the idea because I was reading the house duck thread and someone always takes their house ducks to the beach and said they love it. If something bad would have happened though, it probably would have traumatized is all!!

I don't really try and point the eggs that way when I lay them down. I've read that before, though. It really depends on shape. Some will naturally point with the air cell slanted up and some of my girls lay really round eggs that roll at the slightest bump and I'm lucky just to keep them still while they're on their sides!

Hey can anyone help me dose with nutridrench? I don't want to make a whole gallon for just 1 chick.

Just put 3 drops directly into the chick from the bottle. No need to mix with water. I drip kinda on the side of the beak and usually they drink but if they are out of it, I open the beak and put a drop right in but only a tiny bit at a time. You want to avoid the middle of the back of the throat, they can choke/aspirate.

Yea, a duck swimming away at the beach would be bad!! Lol

And I know what ya mean, some eggs do tend to tip on their own.

I also do the nutridrench straight from the dropper. They will usually peck it on their own and take a sip or two, but I also give fresh water right afterwards too.

You can give it orally, but you should give it based on weight. Any idea how much your chick weighs?

Ok thanks guys. I'll just offer a drop or two then. I don't have a way to weigh my chicks so I unfortunately couldn't do that anyways. Thanks again for all your help and quick replies. :)

Quote: I just did the math and I think you can give as much as 0.07 ml per 100 grams, which is about 3 drops from a 1 ml syringe. Sorry for being so anal about dosing, but I just can't help but be this way.

Well I helped my 2nd to last chick. 1 left that has only just internally pipped sometime last night. Boy it's taking its sweet time. I'm trying to not interfere with this one since it just seems to be slow moving. Can't wait till its hatched though. So far everyone's looking good. Come on baby.. :)

Yes, I fill a little soda cap with water and dip their beaks in afterward to wash the taste away. I forgot to mention that!

That's fine Kathy & good to know. I didn't mention either that I'm using a 1 ml dropper....I think. It might be .5ml (I'll check when I'm home). I save any of the droppers from vet visits that have measurements on them!!

You gotta try to find a way to ignore them. Lol. It makes the time go by quicker. So hard waiting.

I just need to say that I'm officially on vacation!!!

It took so much work to get ready (especially setting up all the animals) that I actually was starting to think it was not worth it. Then packing all the kids and loading everyone in the car & driving 5 hours.

But I'm happy to admit it feels like it was worth it now. We're in a gorgeous, big house, right on the beach in Cape Cod for the whole entire week! I grocery shopped, stocked up on easy foods to make and am not planning on working or cleaning until the last day. I just want to actually sit with all my boys and not have to get up every 5 minutes to do something. I miss Mavis (my house duck) but she'll survive. You can bring a pet, so I asked if she could come and they were stumped. "We've never had anyone ask to bring a farm animal". Ultimately they looked into it and said no. It would have been fun to see her on the beach...but probably more work, which I'm avoiding like the plague. I'll post pics tomorrow!
Glad to hear that you are finally there and can enjoy yourself!!! Have fun and take lots of pics!!!

Haha! We must have been writing at the same time! Sorry I didn't get back to you on FB.
