Our baby chick is 5 days old. The kids picked it out at the feedstore to try to save it. It came from the hatchery like this. It can only stand on one leg. The hock is definitely infected/ inflamed/ swollen as you can see. What should we do? Any help is most appreciated.

As I understand it, red hocks are from difficulty in hatching. I had one with this condition and it didn't make it, which is common. You can search the forum for advice on "red hocks" to read about things you can try.

My memory is fuzzy but I either had a bantam rooster with one leg who had issues with infected hocks, or a chick that had the same issue. I'd soak the chick's legs in a warm Epsom salt bath to help with pain, infection and swelling, and look toward getting some antibiotics and/or painkillers into him. You can easily look up appropriate medications and their dosages for chicks. If the chick looks like he's irritating the wounds by walking on them I'd suggest covering them or building him a "chick chair".
