Hello, I have a light Brahma hen that is a little over 1 year old almost 2 and has been laying around since yesterday. She does get up and walk around and peck at the ground occasionally. She eats when I bring her food and drinks. She has pooped a few times, not a good poop but a little. I put on a glove and put vaseline on the glove and stick my finger in her vent to see if she was egg bound. I felt a large lump on the left side and when I pulled my finger out a little bit of egg white came too. I felt again and the lump is muscle because it was twitching and moving a bit when she moved. It is not far in, it is right when you stick your finger in is where the lump is. Someone please help me, she is one of our favorite hens. I have given her calcium in the form of tums and crushed egg shell. Nothing is hanging out of her. Any ideas byc family?? Sorry if I didn't post a lot of information, I'm in a hurry with her. PLEASE HELP

Is your gal lethargic? Does she have any other symptoms?

Let me do a little research...but from what I've heard, hens are supposed to lay at 6 months.

Did you conclude that she is egg bound?

She could be laying internally, have egg yolk peritonitis, or a tumor. Those things are hard to tell apart until after death or a necropsy. If she is passing albumen she may have just had a shell-less egg break inside. You may want to get some enrofloxacin (Baytril) online or from your vet to treat for infection. At the top of this page you can do a search for "baytril sources" to find it online.

Yes, I think an egg broke inside of her. It looks like white egg coming out

Thank you! I will right away. Tonight we are going to bring her inside and give her eggs with calcium and yogurt with water that has electrolytes in it. And probably give her lots of love just in case.... Ya know :( thank you for the information!

I will keep updating this post in case any wants to follow up. We have just taken her to the vet and we got some antibiotics for her to drink. We don't think it is egg yolk periontitis. Wish us luck! We are bringing her in tonight and going to keep an eye on her

I'll be interested in reading how she does. What antibiotic did the vet prescribe? There are several reproductive disorders in hens, and it can be hard to understand the differences. The Merck Vet Manual has several good articles defining egg yolk peritonitis, internal layer, salpingitis, false layer, and others, if you want to read them.
