Nighttime Roost Area

We have 6 hens. They want to roost on our screened in porch at night. I want to make them a roosting area on our porch so they won't roost on furniture etc and poop everywhere. Does anyone have any ideas? The like our attached wood room, but in the winter it's full of wood!

First of all, do you own the chickens? Or do they own you (a real question here!)?

If you want to let them sleep on the porch then make sure their roost is higher then anything you do not want them to roost on. If they have a favorite area of the porch then set your roost there. Make sure it is big enough for all of them to rest on easily, and a poop-board underneath it will keep your clean-up to a minimum.

They need to spend the night in the coop, to protect them from predators.
Do you really want chicken poop all over your screened in porch.......or a predator to rip thru the screen to get at the birds?
 
ON the porch or IN the porch?

Can you share a picture of the coop?

My daughter's first set of birds far and away preferred the playground / swingset equipment to the coop they had for them. Why? Perhaps it was because the coop was not high enough and lacked the open ventilation the playground equipment offered.

Bottom line is the birds were voting with their feet. Just because they were given a structure called a "coop" didn't mean they had to like it. They didn't. They found something they liked better.
