Does hen house need a wooden roof?

I have seen a lot of information regarding a wire mesh over the chicken run but can't see anything about info on a wooden roof on the actual "hen house" or coop where nests are. Does the actual hen house need a wooden, insulated roof? Our chickens are at a great little coop but there is only wire mesh on top and then a fiberglass overhang over the mesh (the fiberglass is not sealed on to the coop itself). Do they need a completely enclosed house to keep them from extreme cold and extreme heat? They also have part of the coop (a run) that is just enclosed with wire (and the fiberglass overhang). We are in northern California and weather is getting colder. Thanks.

I had a coop/run like that at my last house, The Garden Coop. They did just fine and I loved all the ventilation. In the winter, I slipped some cedar fence panels across the coop part, laying on the wire, to reduce the drafts. Not sure the chickens cared, but it made me feel better. I'll try to find a picture for you.

In the summer I put the boards over parts of the run to make a deeper shade.

Here's an old picture with scrap boards laying on the wire. Eventually we finished the coop and I had 5-6 full length boards I moved around according to weather (the chickens moved in before we were done. Good thing it was summer!)
