The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

As for incubators, I can personally recommend the Hova Bator model 1080. Everything is already pre set. Follow the simple instructions that they include. It's very easy and it is not an expensive unit when compared to others. I put in 34 eggs and hatched 34 chicks. All of which survived to three weeks old now. I had previously used one by Farm Innovators .. Meh .. so so. Get the one with the digital temp and humidity controls. Also invest in an egg turner (any brand) as it makes it so easy all you have to do is pretty much watch.

6 eggs in storage! 5 more days till incubation! 3 Ancona, and 3 Magpie. The Campbells are not laying yet so I guess I won't have any Camponas (CampbellxAncona) This time around. Rats. Come on Campbells Just a few eggs!

question, ive been told you shouldn't hatch a chickens first egg, is there something wrong with hatching the first egg?
First eggs can be quite small and there may not be enough room for the embryo.

Please add me. This will be my first hatch. I have to admit I'm scared!

Welcome!

So excited to hatch again on Easter. at our Assisted Living buildings. Here in Wisconsin!
It is always such fun! here are a couple of pictures from last year, and one of my favorite "Stink Eye" shots....

So glad you are joining us again!

I think I'll try to participate in this hatch along. I'll have to get an incubator because waiting on my hens to go brood is like waiting on Christmas to come on January 1st. I have a barred rock hen and black sex link rooster and their 2 daughter's. I'll be collecting eggs daily so hopefully most will be fertile and hatch.

Just read the first page...so we have over a month before we set...correct?

Somehow Valentine's snuck up on me...I'm still in January apparently.

I don't want to miss the set date...lol.
March 25th for chicken eggs! There will be plenty of reminders!

I had 17 eggs in the bator and today is Day 7. 7 were fertile (my SLW X Wheaten Am eggs), but none of my blue ameraucana girls' eggs were fertile. I tossed all but the 7 fertile ones tonight. Got pics:

Sorry if these don't show up very well...my best camera is my phone, but it hates low light situations. Hope you can see! These are due on the 28th!! I love watching them grow!!!!

ETA: I didn't take pics of the 7th one...it's still kinda up in the air. I saw a couple tiny, poorly defined veins but no embryo and no significant growth. Does this mean it died or is it just a slow developer? I'm keeping til Day 10 either way, just wanted some opinions. I could barely see the veins with the naked eye, so I didn't bother trying to take pics.
If in doubt, leave them in there!

Okay I know you are no supposed to help chicks but should i help this one? He's 2 days late and has not pecked away anything over the corse or 12hrs including yesterday... I really don't want to lose him and hope someone will reply fast
If your temperature is off, your hatch can be late.

I need an answer quickly. I know you should not put the bator in direct sunlight, but can I put it in a place where there is some sunlight? There is lots of windows here!
Mine is always right below a window. We have LOTS of windows because I hate dark houses. My incubator's don't get direct sun on them, but are fine with indirect light.

He lived and he is healthy
